i feel ya...but knowing some traits that different lines throw makes it easier to mix and match dogs that "Click"...I did what your talking about though, I found someone i knew had some good dogs and got a pup off of his dogs..so i might be being hypocritical to myself..lol

Thx for your response dude- deff made sense :)

I was thinking why ppl are so set on certain bloodlines- especially when the dogs are bred over and over. Isn't it hard to keep that same consistency or lets say one wanted a Chinaman dog, wouldn't they go to the source since others are also breeding that line.

Even in humans you see trait that go down generation to generation. Even cousins and so forth. When genetic traits are in a line it's there in the genes. I would say this is more so with body build but can be in temperment

idk this is a dumb thread. of course you want to get a dog from good stock but you look to certan bloodlines if you are looking for something in particular. nothin is definate, its about tendencies but there is a reason so many people use RB and FRISCO. its not completely random, like tank said the genes are passed on

depends, like i said if i wanted some super mouthy eli dogs with a lot of wind then maybe ill go to joe blow nobody with nigerino blood in az who breeds & culls for SUPER MOUTH & WIND.

if i want a eli dog thats super game with a lot of [] smarts than ima go to ben dover is wisconsin who runs some six bits blood cuz thats what mr. dover breeds for.

i wouldnt set my heart on a bloodline just because *those are the traits that joe schmoe says they throw* im going to go with whatever the breeder says he breeds for and whatever goes good for me.

and to answer your question to keep consitency your going to have to inbreed to your standards and cull the undesirables. knowing what to outcross with & what not.

im not the expert to be explaining this stuff though, just my 2 cents that i picked up from older folks!

lwg, u have a great point but tendencies play a huge role in breeding
if not why would we even bother with bloodlines?
why not take a bunch of razors edge and breed for gameness?
some lines are more common than others and there is a reason for that
because they produce better dogs and at a higher %
not sayin rb dogs cant have or be bred for mouth but if someone wants mouth they are gonna start with a line known for mouth with a dog that throws dogs with mouth not a soft mouth redboy dog then breed and cull for mouth. thats a complete waste of time and money. Why would you do that? Lines and tendencies are important...

your not, your dealing with the man behind the bloodline.

i wouldnt breed for mouth id breed for gamedogs, and if you happen to get a freak along the way than kool sounds like your in business see if he's a reproducer and inbreed & cull accordingly.

yea but if im correct, your not necessarily breeding to the bloodline for that, your breeding to the dog. the super rough eli dogs littermate brother may not be able to bite through a wet bag.

hell, you know what....breed to whoever and for whatever you want...your the one feeding em.

im not even one to play teacher really as im still learning alot, and got a lot more to go.

but theres a saying that a few old timers told me, and im sure youve heard on here a few times.
"good dogs, are where you find em!"
theres a reason for that saying! take it for what its worth to you!

but your breeding to that mouthy dog, not that mouthy bloodline.

yeah i think we are arguing bu really sayin the same thing lol
ur talkin about people who breed for papers or just bc of the bloodline which is dumb
im sayin that bloodlines have tendencies and knowing them is a tool
lol its late, im goin to bed:D

Dream pits is right but your a little right yourself. Your on the right track but you could make a wrong turn, lol. I will give you guys some examples. Assuming some jackass didn't screw a whole line of dogs up certain lines are known for certain things. Take this dog right here: http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=10591
The line form this bitch is known for serious serious mouth! You don't breed her thinking your gonna get gameness genes thrown in there. Your breeding her for mouth with dogs that are game enough. Now take this dog here: http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/public/printPedigree.php?dog_id=172139
Your not going to breed this dog looking for mouth. This line is known for it's gameness. If your lucky enough to get a cruncher, great congrats! Now breed these 2 dogs together and hopefully you get terminators!!!

The man behind the dog might be the most important thing to consider when looking for a dog. The man behind the dog isn't going to be trying to breed 2 redboy dogs together to get bone breakers even if the 2 redboy dogs can crunch. Do you see what I am trying to say?

so why do you see it so often that dogman #1 has a yard of jeep dogs that have SUPER wind & will go the distance. but cant bite for shit.

than dogman #2 has a bunch of jeep dogs that are super game AND they can bight through tree trunks.

eventhough theyre different families, theyre the same bloodline.

Just remember nobody really has anything pure. Even though both dogman #1 and #2 both have what they consider Jeep dogs there is another out maybe a 25% out that is giving each dogman that little bit of difference. I don't know alot about the Jeep line because my focus was on other lines but i had similiar thing with my Eli dogs. I had serious game Eli dogs that can crunch. When I did breedings, I never really considered the gameness gene from my eli strain. I just kept thinking I was getting Lucky. Now that I look back I think it was that little sliver of an out that was helping me out the whole time.

Well first you have to figure out what it is that you want in your yard, Then you need to find good dogs that seem to have the traits your looking for. This is where the only breed to produce better quality dogs than the last comes into play, You need to start with the best stock you can and then it is all up to you on how your going to mold it on your yard.

You need a good keen eye to pick out the weak points and bring in dogs that not only work on paper but will more importantly pick up the slack and bring your next breeding hopefully closer to what you want, I am a believer in breeding best to best and culling the rest and then after you get to a point that your happy with the dogs and you know everything behind them and such, Then it is time to try a inbreeding and see what results you yield. And you must be prepared to keep the entire lot for several years or more to see what happens with them and at the same time you have to be prepared to cull the entire lot if things don't go as planned...And this goes for the sire and dam as well should they throw dogs consistently that will end up weakening your overall line in the long run.

Like I am sure all of you know inbreeding only magnifys what you have be it good or bad, And it is because of this you have to know every single possibility that might crop up before you do so.

This is kind of a rough explanation in my ways because I didn't want to go off and get to confusing with it as it is very easy to do.
