Question........help!

Hey All,

I switched to EVO about 6 weeks ago. The boys/girl had great stools for about 3 weeks straight.

For the past 3 weeks, they've had great stools, then diarhea (sp).

They have all been checked for parasites and it's negative. They're now all on an atibiotic, anapram or something like that.

My question is, do any of you think it's the food? From what I and the vet think, it's something boucning back and forth between dogs, giving them the runs.

If it was something in the food, wouldn't they have the runs all the time?

What's all your opinions?

first i would recheck for whip worm it's very hard to detec and the get it from step in other dog crap. also mix alittle cottage cheese or plain yogurt in there food for acouple of days, if they don't have worm's or the cottage cheese doesn't help. I would put them on there old food then slowly try a diff kind but not EVO and remember to switch dog food u have to slowly mixed the two together, so there stomach can get use to the food.

If they all have been checked for parasites and it's negative than get rid of the feed. Anything that makes a dog diarrhea is out the door. But remember "what could be good for one dog is not for another".

 

Too much protein.

 

Did you increase their feed amount? After you have gone through the antibiotic cycle, stop. The antibiotics may be perpertuating symptoms. Give them a day of fasting. Then, as much as you may hate to do so, cut the feed by 1/2 cup or so.

The yougurt and cottage cheese supplement will assist in the digestive process by adding probiotics. The dogs' natural probiotics are being destroyed by the antibiotics. If you will supplement as directed, do so at least 4 hours after or before giving antibiotics. Otherwise, they may counteract each other. Remember, i do not believe antibiotics were necessary at this time. Yet, since you started the 7-day cycle, you must complete it.

 

this is what i warned u about when u said u were switching to EVO. This is exactly what happened to my dog, he was ok for about 2 weeks and then the shits started and went on for almost a month until i finally switched him to canidae. Now people can say what they want AKA Rocky lol, but this just goes to show that EVO is definately not for every dog. I would say switch food ASAP, don't even bother with the whole transition phase, just get urself a new feed and put them right on it, give it a few days to maybe even 2 weeks and see what happens.

 

BOI BOI: I got ya.........It is SO shocking, that their bodies adjusted for the first 3 weeks. Good poop, firm, etc. Then all of a sudden, 3 weeks in, the runs visited us. Shouldn't they have had the runs in the first 3 weeks of just the EVO?

So, your boy did the same thing? Adjusted at the beginning, then stared shitting his brains out? This is not a shitting their brains out all the time. It goes in cycles. 6 days good, 2 days bad.

ROCK: Not increase the food at all. Same as before. I am only in day 1 of their antibotic cycle and it only lasts for 5 days, not 7.

BULLYDOGS: TOOO much protein will cause the squirts, on a inconsistent basis? Shouldn't they have the squirts all the time?

That is what gets me about the feed, is that, if they were to get the runs, why isn't it ALL THE TIME? That is what has me dumbfounded. I know, BOI BOI, you were against the EVO the whole time.

I may try regular Innova or Canidae.

yea it is shocking, my boy was good for about 2 weeks then he actually started to refuse the food because i guess it was messing with his stomach, thats when the shits started, and not like what ur describing, i'm talking about every damn day. I thought its just him getting adjusted to the feed but after a month of this and him actually vomitting from a brand new bag of EVO i said fu*k this and switched asap. After no more than 2 weeks on Canidae he was feeling and looking better with solid stools. Never looked back since

 

That is what gets me, why is it so inconsistent. OBVIOUSLY, if they were always having the runs, I would have switched them. That is what makes me think, they've got some sort of 'bug' or something.

Here is my plan:

1. Stick w/ the antibiotics. (if there is a bug, get rid of it!)

2. Add Innova to the food. 1 cup innova, one cup EVO. (lower the protein levels and richness of the food)

3. See what happens. If they get the runs still, I am going to something else. Maybe Canidae.......(I know you like that BoiBoi

I have always feed Canidae. And then i wanted something with some more protein for intense conditioning. I gave N.V. Instinct which is as high% protein. It worked for a while, and then like you, i noticed all the horrible stools, nothing was coming out solid. The only thing i could tie the problem to was the increase in % of protein. This also sometimes happens when i add too much chicken breast to the feed. Like Boi Boi has stated, i just did not wanna mess around with my dog like that.

In the end no too dogs are alike, it takes constant note taking and careful observation of what you putting in their feed bowls. I weigh everything on a daily basis, and from there i know exactly where to adjust things. At the moment i am content with Canidae and adding some RAW to it. It works fine for us, no need to fix something thats not broke.

Well, I took your advice. After the antibiotics were done, I had another poop test, all negative.

They've still got the runs, so I switched over to a different food. They have been on it for 2 days and still loose, but I am sure it will take more time.

Like someone stated before the protein is too high especially for non active dogs. I also had problems with Evo dog food with runny foul smelling stools even the dog food had a foul smell. Higher the protein content the faster it spoils unless there is some kind of perservative in it to keep it fresh. My theory and I could be totally wrong is depending on the batch. A new fresh batch is good but the longer that fresh batch sits on the shelf the worse it gets because it spoils faster due to high protein content.

 

I keep canned pumpkin on hand for diahrea. I withhold food for 24 hours and then start back with a little canned pumpkin and a handful of dry food and build from there. I have one dog who is a trash eater and gets the shits pretty regular. I know it is not the food. It is whatever crap he eats in the play yard. Be it bugs, other dogs shit, dirt sometimes, whatever. Also, I think they can get viruses like people. I still feed Taste of the Wild and Natures Receipe Lamb and Rice. They work good for my dogs overall. I feed two different ones because I have 2 dogs with allergies. One has sensitive skin and the other full blown allergies. The grain free stuff seems to work good for them.

 

My dogs are pretty active. Pulling, bike riding, walking, spring/flirt poles, we're prettttty active. Anyhow, how long do you all think it would take for them to adjust to the new food?

Good poop should be expected, in what, a week or so? 4 days?

How long until the old food is TOTALLY out of them?

Any insight is welcome

well i would definately give it a full 2 weeks on the new feed before u start to see good results. It will take some time for the dogs digestive system to get used to another feed. If after 2 weeks u don't see any type of improvement then we'll have to figure out something else.
Are they on straight Innova or are u still mixing with EVO

 

Nope....switched to something totally different and you would not approve of it NO MORE EVO.............Poop is getting better, still not ROCK solid, but better.

They started the new food on 5/22 (that was a 1/2 new and 1/2 EVO) 5/23 to now has been 100% new..............

Someone on here said "too much protein" I would ave to agree. Evo is high n protein, more than a lot of dogs really need.

Not any feed will work for all dogs. A lot of people, find themselves having 2-3 different kibbles. I know I do.
