How common where blue dogs pre-1976? Are there any CH.'s? Did any of the famous dogmen have any blues on their yard?

Check the Stratton article on blue dogs. It mentions a yard of pre-76 blues who were supposed to be good, game dogs.

yup, they're not all bred simply for "color".....;)

  6. Good performance dogs don't have bad colors... even if they're pink with green stripes and yellow nose .

    :p

  7. Don't know about pre '76 but in the mid '80s I saw a few good blues. Not common at all but sometimes a buckskin colored dog would throw a blue.

  11. Like another poster said, there are good and bad in every color. Although most Blues you see advertised are well over working mans prices for a good old fashion bred GAME dog. The same people that like the pretty colors also seem to desire them to be the size of small dinosaurs advertizing MONSTER pits and such in excess of 80lbs. These are the blue dogs most commonly associated to Blue Pits. Alot of people "not " dogmen breed them for size, color & money obviously. I see them out here in the paper all the time and just laugh. I pay $1500.00 and have to clean up dino shit too? $1500.00 it better burry it for me and carry on a good conversation.

I met a guy out in Tx. That had gamebred blues and were pretty nice in small size which surprised me.

  13. Yep they say the same about horses, good horse is never a bad colour.

Does anyone now if it´s some kind of rare gene or why aren´t there more of blue game breed dogs?

  15. I think blue is a recessive trait and game dogs aren't bred for color

there arent THAT many "unknowns" there, besides, peds online is only good for so much info. for example, one of my dogs shows an "unknown" in the 3rd...but it simply because the sire and dam arent in the database...
adam's "miss buster" sire-adam's "buster", dam fergusons "baby snookum" (both are adba registered, just not entered on the peds online database)

I own a blue apbt she is 8 months old adba and 30lbs and I also have her brother who is a male fawn adba 40lbs they are from the same litter and both of them have alot of sorrells in their pedigree's. The whole blue dog thing gets old but IMO color does not equal performance and not all blue dogs are the same . Here is my blue girl sadie

I know I'll get bashed for this post but, I've never had a problem with blue dogs its when you bred for the blue color or get mostly blue's out of a litter that I have a problem with, you might get a blue dog out of every 1000 dogs but not 20 dogs out of 100 :(

If you do your breeding for color alone and yes I do have a problem with that

Well said marty !! I know sadie was the only blue dog in her litter the rest looked like simba her brother and there were 1-2 choclate/reds. Either way I think it's ignorant to think a dogs color determines how game it is. That's just BS there was a time when old doggers hated red dogs too. This topic will always be debated and people will always have their predjudices but w/e I'm proud of my girl sadie she is not some overdone mutated hippo that came from a blue on blue fad breeding. She has all the spunk and drive in the world and her gameness means nothing to me because I am not a dogfighter so I'll never know and don't care either way.

I am with you on that part Marty.......no dog should be being bred for color only and lets face it, majority of the blue dogs born today are being bred for color. Do i question the genetic make up of alot of these blue dogs.....yes I do. Its hard not to especially with the rise in the color fad one can only question the the strength of the genetics that the breeder is putting back into thier breeding program.
