when is it most healthy for her to breed?

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by blondie03044, Mar 6, 2008.

  1. I have two apbt's and I intend on breeding them in the future. I've heard that for females their second heat is the best time, but my bitch will just be turing one the same month as her second heat. Personally I feel that she isn't ready. She is still a puppy to me. what are your thoughts?

P.S. as you can see i am new to this forum, I wasnt sure where would be the best place to post this thread. I hope I was close :)

You have to be the judge of that, but I would say that you should wait until she is about 2 years old or so .

IMO shes deffenatley to young...i personally would leave the breeding to the breeders who health test and breed to make sure that they are putting out healthy-well rounded dogs. but of course thats your choice...do u have the pedigree's on your dogs?

  4. thats what i say but other apbt owners i talked to said the second heat for the female is the best heat to do in. but i dont know.

well i think she should atleast be alittle more mature, thats like getting a 12 year old pregnant, still a baby. but ya i suggest not breeding her, if you want a pup save up some extra bread and get a pup from a reputable breeder, hopefully ADBA registered.

  7. yeah that what i was thinkin thats why i was kinda shocked when people where sayin that the second heat is the best....

I would advise you to wait until she is fully mature, around 2-3 years of age. At that time you can have her hips, elbows, and heart screened for possible defects that could be passed on to her offspring.

Until then, work on proving her worth through as breeding stock.

There are thousands of pit bulls, many of which end up dead in shelters across the nation. What makes yours any better?

Asking when to breed a female shows how much experience you have which obviously isn't much. LEAVE THE BREEDING TO THE PROFESSIONALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. You beat me to it.

I can't say I'm completely innocent of being this way, either, since my dumb arse was thinking about future breeding while my pup was still a pup. But I sure as heck know I'm in no way qualified now. The studying, work, time, all comes before planning a breeding.

Breeding on the 2nd heat is a BYB's thing. They think its alright to breed their bitches on the 2nd heat no matter their actual age :(

Personally, I wouldnt ever breed a female before the age of 3. This gives them PLENTY of time to grow and develop, and to prove their worthiness of being bred. Being bred is not a right because they have a hole and some papers, being bred is for the ones who earn & deserve to pass on their genes IMO.

I love my dogs to death & i think they would be worthy of breeding, but i dont them. Why? Because there will ALWAYS be someone out there producing better dogs than i ever could. Why put my females through all that (and me!!), when i can skip the whole process and get exactly what i want for much cheaper? Kind of a no brainer to me.

When is the best time to breed?

When she's titled and health-tested. That gives you a few years. ;)

hey guess what they didnt become professionals over night and asking questions is the only way to get answers, thats how you learn... and become a "professional" :)
oh and there is no need to yell ur gettin no where

  14. yeah i thought she is to young i probably wont breed her untill she is much older. i just wanted to see what all yall opinions where :)

The yelling is for stuff like this. You'll probably wait until she is older? So many people have put years and years handling, working, training these dogs, studying the breed and general canine health and genetics before thinking of breeding. They breed based upon a plan, a goal in mind, and work to improve the breed. So ya, people will yell when you so non-chalantly go about something that many here take very seriously.

People don't become professionals by putting the cart before the horse. Which is what you have done....what you are doing....by already deciding that you will breed these 2 dogs without knowing even the basic mechanics of it.

Lots of info and knowledgable people on this site. Hopefully, you'll take the hard road with these dogs. It will be worth it, I promise.

Of course, ignorance may be bliss, too, so if you don't want to take advice and just shut it off, you may be just as happy. But don't listen to me, I'm probably just being an ass with this :p

Dame I don't think you should be breeding if you have to ask that question wtf just cause you have a male and a female dose not mean that you could stick them to get pups or to make some quick $ it just sounds like your typicall byb but to each his own. Let me ask you somthing how long have you been around this breed? Do you know about the female cycle that the first week she will become aggresive and if you let your dog go let him mount her you will have a mess on you hands did you know that? Shit I've been around this breed almost my whole life and iam not near ready in breed any dogs any time soon to much time and work getting a whelping box set up giveing her vitamins and all that good stuff. Iam still learning this breed just my two cents

It is of no surprise to any one here at Game-dog that the subject of breeding is a "hot button". The fact that you asked this question here in this forum is telling. I would suspect from this statement alone you have no mentor to help guide you through becoming what you coin as a "professional". So what does this situation say about your desire to breed your dogs. Have you asked yourself this one KEY question?

Why are my dogs worthy of breeding?

If the answer is anything short of they are accomplished to the point that breeding them MAY produce a comparable offspring to the parents, you will be guilty of adding to the substandard over population of PBs that end up as head lines by those who would eliminate the PB breeds altogether. These dogs are PTS by the thousands, every day. Dogs of sub-standard animals of unknown possible characteristics are the root of many dogs with unstable temperments. The environment these dogs are born into lends itself to being SOLD to clueless people about the breed and then the lack of training, the improper containment and a slew of other disasterous by products end up adding to the fuel of our enemies to irradicate the PB completely.

I would bet to venture you know relatively little about your dogs, other than you REALLY like them and want to make some cute puppies.....every substandard puppy is a nail in the coffin of these breeds. Please think of that before you assist in the elimination of the PB breeds altogether. If you are on the up and up and truely have the answers to the questions that are being thrown at you, go for it....but then if you did I doubt you would be on the internet asking.

Considering that her dogs are razors edge and gotti and supposedly watchdog ( I thought that line was blue not red/ rednose, but I dont really know that much about the line) She has Am Bully's not pit bulls. Likely nothing anyone says here will change her mind. Considering that she thinks her dogs are "bread" that is JMO.

I would highly suggest you not breed the dogs at all and have them all spayed and neutered. In order to feel right about breeding and knowing whats best for your dogs you would know how ridiculous it sounds to consider breeding a bitch at a year or on her second heat. She cant prove anything about her worthiness or need to be bred in a years time... and I doubt this dog will ever accomplish anything making it worthy to be bred in the first place... so please take my suggestion into consideration and go visit your local Vet first thing in the morning since to me it sounds like you just happen to have 2 dogs you call pitbulls and you want puppies for some reason, which I am sure is not a good one at that..???
