Dont cut out a full circle, leave a ledge at the bottom and it helps to "slow down" the dragging out of the hay.

Oh,Im well aware of how to keep beeding in,I was wondering about that particular barrel setup..I usually keep the bottom ledge at least 8' (10-12' is prefered)from the bottom of the house..

Drove around for a good week looking for barrels before I found a company willing to sell them. Got 15 for $100. Was asking $6 a peice. He pays $75 for them new.

Some of the first places I looked, was butchers, a grease factory, and large food distributors. I finally found them at a large fishing company. Was buying them full of spices for sauces, and only use he had after words was filling them with some sort of habitat and sinking them for his stocked pond. Can only use so many for that, litterally had 100's just piled up in a shed.

We used the last one this weekend, and will be needing more soon. If anyone nearby wants a large number, I may be able to help you out.

here you go. Hope this helps...
This is how we set ours up. The wood and the barrel are screwed together...

We just measure how thick the barrel is and make the wood that long, then once it's all assembled, we cut down the wood on the sides.
The black thing we just screwed to it, as a wind/rain guard, works really well...We also drill two holes in the bottom of the barrel for drainage...
For bedding, we use cedar shavings...

Not only will some dogs eat the hay, alot of dogs become itchy and are allergic to the hay. The hay is alot stiffer (and can hold mold spores) than straw. Straw is softer, and as long as you clean it out and put fresh straw in regularly, its the best bedding there is IMO

There is a lip in the entrance that keeps most of it in. I use to chip the whole chainspot to cut down on dust too which helped alot. It can't be good for the dogs to breath all that sh!t they kick up...I miss that yard. I hung a flood light in one of the trees back there so I could hang out at night. The old lady use to get so mad because I spent all my time out with the dogs instead of sitting inside watching the damn Lifestyles channel. :) A cooler full of beer, a nice bonfire, a couple good friends and some fine bulldogs at the end of their chains made for some pretty fun nights and ALOT of old doggin stories. Ive got to give credit to TripleJ for that one. He guided me in putting it all together. Though it was only a four dog setup, it was mine and I loved it.

Thanks everyone for the ideas I had a question about this one dose it just sit on the wood or do you nail it down to the front and the back of the wood.

We screw the barrel and wood together on the side wood and on the bottom wood. This way it won't fall off or sway.

I have barrels and wood. I have the PVC on the bottome of the front and back like gamebred showed, and have a hole drilled in the rear and front of the barrel to let water drain out. I take a barrel and cut the top and bottom off, rip it down the middle, and cut those two pieces in half for the awning to keep rain water out. Drain hole are to get the last bit of water out after cleaning. I have some materiel that came from the paper mill, which looks like felt, but is actually steel screen, and make a flap on the entrance to keep wind down. The entrance is cut out of the lid, and during summer time, I simply remove the lid so wind can get in.
On my wood dog houses, I cut a pallet in half for the bottom, and I'll piece in the missing wood on the bottom. When I do this, it still leaves enough a gap so that water can drain out. the lids I have are hinged so that it is easy to acces and clean. The barrels are non purous, like rock said, and the wood is. Both have pros and cons. The con for the pourous materiel in the wood is that flea and tick chemicals soak into the wood, and will have a longer active time.
If you go with the barrels, and use the pvc, in the middle of the pvc(where you will be bolting to the barrel) cut a gap so you can get a wrench on the nut. dont screw them down, get a bolt and nut with large metal washers. the screws will pull out fairly quick if you have an active dog. Also, get some of them big(12") nails/spikes, and drill a hole in each of the ends of the pvc, and drive the nails in at an angle towards the middle on all four ends. This will keep the barrel from being played with.
