A pit bull that was attacking a Jack Russell terrier at Rabe Meadow in Stateline last week was shot dead by the terrier's owner, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy said.

Terry Peterson, owner of Guns of Tahoe in Zephyr Cove, told authorities he was walking his unleashed terrier named Mack in the meadow. The 3-year-old pit bull, also unleashed, was with snowshoers. When the two dogs saw each other, they ran at each other despite calls to stop from their owners, the deputy said.

The snowshoers affirmed the pit bull was friendly but Peterson said the pit bull chomped Mack at the abdomen, took him to the ground and made thrashing motions.

Peterson told authorities he feared the pit bull would kill his dog.

"Peterson said before he knew what was happening, he pulled out a .38 (caliber) handgun and shot the dog three times, once in the abdomen and twice in the head area," the deputy's report stated.

Peterson took Mack to a veterinarian. John Albers, the pit bull's owner, described his dog as good tempered but heard from the snowshoers, who included his wife and her friend, that his animal was the aggressor, the deputy said.

The case was fowarded to the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.

Riiight, so this crazy old bastard is walking around with a loaded pistol and an itchy trigger finger and it's the Pit Bull who's the bad guy in the story. What are you more afraid of?

It is sad and crazy, but one should never let their pit run off lead unless its on their own property or a dog park (which may be equally as irresponsible depending on the dog).

Well, I've owned Jack Russells and they are not defenseless.
We owned one, Jack (original, eh? LOL), we he got mad at us he'd dart out the door under our noses and go hit the most dominant male on the yard...no sooner would you get them broke up and he'd jump right back on him. He was a trip !
I personally feel the shooting was unjustified !

me too, classic. I'm trying to find some sort of follow-up to this story. while I believe that both dogs should have been restrained (my biggest pet peeve), the other guy had NO justification in shooting the apbt as he was breaking the law as well. and it was stated that they BOTH went for each other. can you say "take it up with my lawyer, bastard!" ;)

Well this definitely is a case of someone going to far. "Before he knew what happened" is a dead give away to his irresposible fly off the handle actions. And yes Jack Russels are not defenseless they can take a beating and perhaps dish it out. But that aside, he probably would have shot any dog for the same reason. This guy should never have been allowed a gun...

My neighbor has 4 of the little jack dogs, the constantly run over and aggrivate my pit. Though she did attack them back when they all ran in our yard and my two boys were playing outside! She didn't hurt them much but it was enough to send them home. You know them little dogs still come and cause trouble with my pit? oh well...it must be a jack russell thing.

i just think that is so funny, but as a groomer, i have also seen what those little dogs can do.....IMHO, they are just as vicious as chihuahua, to a groomer at least...lol

See now this pisses me off. This is about 45 min from my house. I have been all around lake Taho with my dogs and grew up in the area as well. There is a NO discharge policy all around the lake. So like stated above since this guy owns a gun shop he can carry a gun? A .38 at that, what the hell is that going to do aginst any threats in ther area? Will it kill a bear? NO. So why have it with you? Tahoe has little crime Im sure it wasent for protection.

i agree. i've only been to tahoe once but there's no way it's a crime ridden city. so then why the protection. it's mostly a tourist and vaccation spot that people go to to get away from the crime and clutter of a more metropolitan city. i know here you need a concealed weapon permit to even carry a gun and on top of that those are limited to the public. they're mainly held by law enforcement and retired law enforcemant. even if you have one and shoot of a gun in the city or county you can still be arrested for recklessly shooting a firearm or other charges and get jail time. there was a case in the paper here a while back where a man was being burgularized and he killed the burgalar. his gun was legal and he had a permit. but because a bullet went into the house across the street he was arrested and spent almost 2 months in jail for protecting his home and family. this guy who shot the pit needs to be arrested and have the book thrown at him.
