    "Ticking" Marks

What are these marks? Is the proper name ticking marks and where do they stem from? Are they hereditary? Anyone that has knowledge, please satisfy my curiousity..

i am not sure what it is called but my dogs belly has them on it. his belly is white and has black spots like that. i know it is not merle. never heard a name for it.

  5. Re: "Ticking" Marks

it is just the pigment in the skin that supports that color, alot of thorough bred dogs have it, i have a jack russell that has champion bloodlines that we paid over a dime for and she has them.

  6. Re: "Ticking" Marks

merle comes from a different breed of dog, as found in many books.

    Re: "Ticking" Marks

The dog in question is NOT merle.
She is just spotted, and possibly ticked.
Ticking are spots on the skin (under the hair)
usually increase in number and size as the pup grows to adult,
but generally they are quarter size or smaller.
Generally the ticking spots are more apparent when the dog is wet
    such as after a bath.
Hope this helps...if not send me a message.

Correct classic, merle ussually comes in a blue form and is more of a "splotch" then a spot

    Hey Jenn...

I forgot to add that we have a real looker with a gazillion ticking spots.
Don't let peeps get to you when they say,
    "Is that dog part dalmation?"
We have heard it a million times, and it is just ignorance.
You have a nice looking dog !

i think the ticking marks show up more on white dogs but even colored dogs can have them spots to

    Re: "Ticking" Marks

definately not a merle. i have a female that has the same spots. not to bad but they are starting to come in more. about them being hereditary i think they might be. my cousin has the sire and dam of my female, they're also the grand sire and dam to another of my females. both of them have the spots on their ears and the older one has them other places also. i noticed every dog that the dad throws off that is mostly white has those spots, and all of those same dogs have them on the ears as does the sire. it's his trademark. so we say at least.

    Re: "Ticking" Marks

I have 1 of those Dalmation looking dogs. I have people ask all the time if he is part Dalmation. His markings are like yours but more of them and bigger spots. At first the dappling was primarily on his skin but as he matures the color is beginning to show in the hair over the skin spot.

He is 1 year old the 28th of this month and now he is spotted with quarter, nickel, and dime sized spots that range from black to a dilute black/blue with brindle hints.

I have him at work today so if someone here at work will help me with my technical difficulties I will try to upload some pictures of the "Doose"

    Re: "Ticking" Marks

LOL - yes, I have had many people tell me "NICE DALMATION" and I just say Thanks...
It's best that way they can stay ignorant, LOL it doesn't bother me. When I took her home she was solid white with the Large "MOO MOO" patterns and mask. As she has gotten older she has obtained MORE SPOTS, LOL. I think she gets a new one every day LOL and YES YES that are SO much more obvious when she is wet. I was just mainly curious as to what the heck they were, Thanks for the info Classic!

HEY pit stop - click on manage attachments after you hit reply and then browse to your picture. (best I can do)
