Not all pits are killers! Last week someone tried to walk into our house when my wife and baby girl were there....I was at work. Well needless to say he almost became a statistic if it wasn't for the hardend glass in the door. My wife said she never heard them " freak out " like that. I was happy. They did their job. For a while I wasn't sure they even had a mean bone in their body. Well the other night I was returning home and saw a bull snake laying in the middle of the road. he was about 16 inches long. Nothing too big. Well I stopped and grabed him so he wouldn't get ran over and was going to let him loose behind my barn. Well I walked into the house with this thing on my hand to show my wife...well act to scare her, and my dogs freak out. My 2 female pits are barking and growling as they back up. The snake was hissin. He was pissed! My amstaff walks right up and starts sniffin it. I think she was trying to eat it. My 9 wk male pit puppy didn't know what to do. The poor little guy just kept gettin stepped on. After my wife stopped screamin I took it outside and let him loose. As I walk back into the house my brindle female is growling and barking at me. Almost like she was going to bite me. My other female pit is shaking, hiding on the couch. I walk up to her and make the hissing sound again and she pisses all over the couch and jumps in the window to hide behind the curtains. My amstaff could care less. Now these were the dogs that were throwing their bodies against the glass to get that asshole but freakout and piss at the sight or sound of a snake. So needless to say I spent 2 hours washing and steam cleaning the couch and carpet. I thought it was funny and fig I would share it on here with all of you. And they say pits are all blood thirsty killers. If I find another snake I think I'll record it.

This breed is not a gaurd dog nor a protection dog and should NEVER be praised for doing such things IMO....

I think you need to read up a little more on the proper temperament for this breed.

They seem like they are the opposite representation of this breed.

I could be wrong but ... this sounds like a dominance issue to me. In the case of the man coming to the door, the Alpha (their master - aryan900) was gone & the dog(s) took the role of protector(s) of the "pack" by trying to attack &/or scare off the intruder.

In the case of the snake, their alpha WAS present & the dogs looked to their alpha (aryan) for protection, got no protection whatsoever & as a result were scared to the point of urinating on themselves.

If this IS the case, I'd implment NILIF w/ these dogs ASAP b/c it won't be but a matter of time before they try to assert their dominance over the woman & child. They're obviously coming to that idea now, as evidenced by their lack of letting their beta (aryan's wife) handle the issue of a harmless stranger.

Had they respected her authority over them in the "pack" they would have let her handle the issue & backed her up, but instead, they overrode her authority & took the matter into their own paws.

Better nip that blossoming dominance in the bud before it is too late & someone - either your wife, your child or a stranger - ends up getting bitten.

    JMHO ...

The first thing you need to understand is that dogs freaking out at an unknown is never a sign of a good guard dog. It is, however, a sign that the dogs need more training. A good guard dog will bark only once or twice and then stand/sit waiting to see if it's friend or foe. This happens because the owner has put in the effort to train the dog to alert at the unknown and then stop and wait on command.
Secondly, teasing your dogs to the point where they react like they did is not a good way to build up their trust in you which will be required when you need them to follow commands.

Lastly, since I see we posted at the same time LOL, ABK has some good advice.

wow...well first sounds like some well bred byb dogs you have there..so did you feel like a real man striking fear into some little puppies...you remind me of a little kid with a booger on his finger chasing around little girls.

Good point DryCreek. I didn't even consider the "freaking out" reference.

A dog "freaking out" at an unknown is almost always nothing more than fear aggression & it's DEFINITLEY not a sign of a good guard dog. Basically, the dog is putting on a bluff to (hopefully) scare off whatever they're scared of. I had a Doberman like that once. She would put on the most fierce threat display you ever saw. Growling, snapping, charging - the whole bit. You think she'd eat you slap up. But if you stamped your foot & aggressed on her, she would head for the hills.
