Of course "stray", sounds better, but you don't blast stray poodles. Hard to say a poodle will kill a full grown human, absent extenuating circumstances. Pitbulls while in general to not have the propensity to attack / show HA as much as say chiuawa, sheperd, etc..., they do have exponatially more potential to cause damage. Clearly it is the dogowners fault. Every police officer is trying to make it home in one piece. No exceptions, no chances taken. Think of your job, are any of you willing to risk dying at work? Of course, in hindsight, the shooting was unjustified (MONDAY morning quaterbacking is always easier than doing it on Sunday afternoon.) Google "AMADOU DIALLO". Unarmed man shot at 41x by police for nothing.... and the police walked scott free.
Many times I've picked up my dog and hauled a$$, running away from some unleashed cur. It was a preventive measure to protect my dog from being a victim of circumstances, not from the curs bite.

P.S. Heck no, I doubt they would know a pitbull if they saw it. (I:E: "Is that a pure pit?") 9/10 x a pure bred wouldn't be left unleashed. They are generally considered to valuable. People tend to protect thier investments. Losing a dog you paid $25 - $150 for is a lot easier to accept than losing one you paid $1,000. Deep down inside, you know your $25 dog, is just that. Granted emotional value may be more, but not much if you are letting it run around unsecured. (Of course there is always a reason or excuse).

P.S. If I could chose which to be attacked by, I'd much rather it be something a field goal kick could stop cold. IE: Poodle, Jack Russel, or hot dog . (LONG SKINNY) Definately not a gamebred APBT, who decides to attack me with the same intensity as it would an opponent. With "GAMENESS". I wouldn't stand a chance.

Cop was probably a rookie who thinks that he's a hero now for shooting a dog 6 times. Excessive force much? I'd say so. If that dog really was going after that man's child, he wouldn't be able to pull the dog off without suffering just a minor bite. Damn guy probably suffered it while trying to jump in his suv after the dog.

Hero cop and protective dad got their 15 seconds of fame.

Media got a story to sell to the public.

    Another APBT dies.

    Sh*t pisses me off.
