I was wondering what makes a dogman? Like what seperates them from other RESPONSIBLE breeders? myself I have no idea, so I figured id ask.

A dogman is just a term used to describe a person that owns/raises bulldogs.

They can be irresponsible or not.

I don`t think you can be considered a dogman untill you have most of your time and life invested in your dogs.I have only been breeding and owned game bred dogs a little over a decade myself and I do not consider myself a dogman.

My definition of a Dogman is pretty much what Wayne said. Anyone who has dedicated thier lives to the APBT and does it respectfully is a dogman in my eyes. A dogman is someone who is admired and knows the ins and outs of this breed and strives to improve his yard with every breeding that is done.

A pre - 1976 dogman is a person who loves his dogs. He accepts his dog with all its faults, even as he works to improve them. He treats his dogs humanely. He fights for his dog's well being with the gameness and determination that may exceed his dog's. Infact if the situation calls for it, he is willing to die for his dog, as his dog is willing to die for him. He breeds his dogs to duplicate what he has or to better it. He educates others about his dogs. He keeps a positive light on his dogs. Most important, he stakes his reputation on his dogs.

All he has is his dogs and family, because material things , although nice, pale in comparison to that "PERFECT", dog. His friend. Loyal companion.

That's my definition. Wrong or Right.... its the only one I got!

Ok... so a person who has been involved with these dog for lets say 30+ years and a person who is 1.5 into the dogs fall into the same catagory?........ remember I'm new I'm just trying to understand

I was also trying to convey, that a dogman, is not always a dog fighter. He is about much more than that. One can easily be a dogman with out being a dog fighter, and just as easily be a dog fighter, with out being a dogman. Its about the compassion for the dog. One can't be considered a DOGMAN in my book, without showing compassion for the dogs. I just forgot to be specific about that, because I took it for granted that it was understood to be pre - 1976, for historical, educational, & entertainment purposes.

I'm glad it helped, and glad Lockjaw checked me when I was slipping. I'm tired, and accidently mis-typed, as well as forgot the disclaimer. I owe you 1 @ Lockjaw. Thanx for saving my A$$.

"He accepts his dog with all its faults, even as he works to improve them." (EZDOGZ818)

    can you elaborate on this

Only for you Minor, I'll elaborate. Pre - 1976, he wins 2, loses 1. Make him a house pet. How about your defination of a dogman Minor; if you have one.

Pre-1976 He wins 2 and loses one by being picked up or quitting? I dont see any curs having made it off the yard let alone in the house. Pre 1976 of course. Just for shits and giggles.

dogman - someone that lives, eats, breaths for this breed. Someone that keeps these dogs in their "circle". Someone if they must cull, does it humanely. The person has to have the "passion", the "heart". That's what the word means to me.

A dogman is one that has the knowledge to seek out the truth in his dogs, and the wisdom to know what to do with them.....now..how about that,I hope yall liked that, cause it took me two days to come up with it..hahahaha

Hey, at least you put some thought in it. I give you a thumbs up for effort.

Pre 1976 of course: It wouldn't matter, if he is your friend and loyal companion, and you are his. Now on the yard of a dogfighter, the dog will get culled ASAP, for quitting, losing, soft mouth, short stamina, bad moves, IE: Turns, screams etc..The cur is useless to a fighter. Roughness doesn't matter the least. If he quit once, he'll quit again, and the stakes are just to high to risk again.
The dogman may also cull for the same reason, although he may used different methods to cull. Some dog men will give the dog away to a family, while simply tearing up the papers. R.O.M. & P.O.R. catergories where created, for the dogs who could no longer win in the pit, but still had value, and deserved an opportunity to live as well attempt to shine again.
Now I don't know first hand, and can only speak from rumor, but I believe Frisco (Son of CH. Chinaman) curred out, and yet he is the top R.O.M. producer.* (Controversy ignorned, for example purposes)
