  1. i have an eight month old male who is getting a lot of irritation near his butt and along his flanks. some of the irritation appears to look like bumps, but some of it has turned into a rash of some sort. he is treated with flea medication, so i don't think that is the problem. any ideas/remedies?

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

it could be the flea medicine itself.. if he has allergies. Some dogs break out and develop spots like you descirbe from all sorts of allergies like flea medicine, the carpet, seasonal
Or it could be a hot spot,

the only way to tell 100% is to have a vet check it out

It sounds like a rash?/allergy? my boy suffers from. I have been treating it with a product I got from my vet called derma-vet. Another brand name for the same stuff is derma-gen.

The first ingredient is nystatin in combo with streptofon and a couple of broad spectrum antibiotics.

It is the only thing I have found to be effective, I tried hydro-cortisone cream which works for allergies sometimes, and then tried some miconozole for fungal infection.

Finally found the derma-vet in my refrigerator left over from a couple of years ago when we treated another dog for an infection. Improvement within 24 hours, but if it is the same thing that ails my dog it takes some time to completely kill it.

it could be coming from the food you are feeding. what type do you feed?

  5. i feed him wellness puppyfive mix. he has had the same food and same flea ointment(advantage) since he was eight weeks old. i am going to try hydrocortizone, and then maybe the derma-gen. it doesn't seem to bother him too much, but he is a light cream and you can see the bumps and rashes in his skin.

Another question.... Is he outside, have a dog house with hay/straw by any chance? Since its the colder weather and if he has a dog house with hay/straw he could have an allergy to that.

Not to be gloom and doom but it would be best to take him to the vet because there are all kinds of problems that can be an allergy to demodex mange (which at this age would be when it sprung up). At least at the vet you will know for sure what the problem is!

    Good luck!

i think the lady is right and it seems like a lotta dogs get bumps from the hay or straw

  8. no, he is a spoiled indoor puppy. he hasn't slept outside a day in his life, or ever played in straw. i gave him a bath with oatmeal shampoo and it helped for a day, but it comes back the next day. i just feel so bad!

Although we can offer suggestions, we cannot make a diagnosis on a dog we have never seen. My advice is to take her to the vet & have it checked out. Lady Rampage is right. It can be as little as a flea allergy (not all flea meds work on all dogs) or it could be as bad as demodex (something you want to find out asap so you can treat asap). Keep us posted.
