This is a hypothectical question, for historical, educational and entertainment purposes; and in no way condones any violation of the 1976 animal welfare act, and only relates to ficticional events that are pre - 1976.

I would like your opinions on this hypothectical scenario related to gameness and genitics. Say a dog convinced you he was game by winning several contests. Some as long as 3hrs. Suddenly he loses his 6th time out. 1hr (stopped) He is 4 1/2 to 5 yrs old. Is he a cur? Should he be out of the breeding program? Do you feel his genetics changed with opinions?
I just wanted to gauge opinions on this purely pre 1976 hypothectical dilema. I already have my own opinions, but I wanted to study different ones. There are knowledgable Dogmen and women here, so I figured this was the place. Again, this is a purely hypothectical, for historical, educational, and entertainment purposes only question; and in no way should be construed as violating the 1976 animal welfare act, attempting to do so, or condoning violation of said act.

Let me ask you this... Have you ever had a bad day?

No not really....I've read about plenty of dogs that went good for a while then lost one...but they were a great asset to their breeding program, and produced very good dogs. That dog earned his/her spot, and wouldn't be going anywhere. Maybe thats all that dog had in him, some went 5, some went 9 or 10.

Like Marty said....Ever had a bad day? I know I have, so have my dogs, especially at a show, Bud went out on Sat as normal, on Sun, he must have had a bad one, he growled at the judge, so I pulled him out of the ring and put him up.

well look at dogs in history with similar circumstances. one such dog is snooty.

maybe the dog got some diasese that caused him to not be up to par tick fever ,babasia or any number of other things?

  7. I am going to go with the majority so far, and say that he/she is still worthy of being bred. The historical precedence says that this has happened to some great dogs (someone mentioned snooty, there was a recent hot topic about another great producing dog where some of these questions were raised) in the past. He may have been stopped, but could have been "picked up game." Also human error probably played a large part in his/her loss. For example, conditioning problem, disease, inexperienced handler,

  8. I think every fight takes something out of the dog. In addition, many champions are only champions because they did not have meet the right dog.And many curs could be allive ... if they would not have the bad luck to meet the wrong dog.

These dogs are hard fighters, however, not from steel. They are of meat and blood. Of course they can have a bad day. They can feel weak, bad condition ,whatever.

I'm still a bit of a newbie to the whole thing...but...
If I were that dogwoman from before 1976, then I would put the dog in a few more matches. If he got back to performing, then I'd keep him on in a breeding program, to see if it was just a "bad day". If he didn't, then I'd consider just retiring him to a life of being just a pet. If he had a disease/sickness like one person said, then I definitely wouldn't breed him.

Yeah, it could have been many things that would make it loose. Its just hard to tell what would do it.

I suppose you'd have to first look at who the dog had victory over. If the wins were against "nuthing much" and "kissy kissy poo", and "wrestle mania" or "growls allot" (get my point?), then you might have to say that the less than an hour wall jumper just showed what it was made of. Little fish, in a little water bowl look big, but placed in the ocean, they are tiny.
Did the genetics change? I'd have to say no. It's kinda like inbreeding and you get some abnormally ugly/ignorant 3 legged dogs. The genetics did not change, but what was hidden came to the surface. It was there the whole time.
All that being said, can a good one have a bad day? Yes. Are some 1XL bred and the pups sought after? Yes.

I would think that its possible for a good dog to be ruined, no matter what we're talking about. I know its not the same thing, but a friend of mine had a dog who loved doing obedience ruined when she came over a blind jump and crashed into another dog, breaking her teeth. She was never the same after that. I don't know how you would ruin a game dog, but I'm sure that an inept handler could do it. Plus, as someone else said, under the right/wrong conditions, anything will quit.

Well in your hyothetical situation if a dog has gone 3 hours once before... that could of really taken a toll on your dog and stack that on the fact that it was his 6th show and I would have to say that I wouldnt lose any sleep keeping him at stud. Any dog that has a 3 hour match in him has proven he has what it takes in my opinion.
