So I'm walking my new Pit this morning and we come to one area where he starts going nuts. There was a women on her patio watering her plants and she noticed me and the dog and she said "good morning, that's a really cute dog, what kind is it?" So of course I tell her what he is, and then I say "he either smells a cat or a squirrel because that's the only time I see him get this excited." She says "oh yeah, my indoor and outdoor cat is right is over there." Sure enough there was the cat, looking at both of us in a defensive posture sitting on top of someone's patio. So I said to her "my dog is very cat aggressive, and I would hate it if one day I was walking him around here and wasn't paying attention and he got a hold of your cat, because I know he would kill it." So she says to me, "that's okay, I would just get another one." WTF?!?!

So I said to her, "well regardless of whether or not you care about the life of your cat, I don't want my dog getting hurt, and according to the lease guidelines there is no such thing as an indoor and outdoor cat. Cat's need to be indoors at all times. So since I know where you live I will report you to the management office if I see your cat outside again. I don't need my dog killing your cat, or getting scratched in the process and having vet bills to deal with or a blind dog because of your negligence." So she immediately stops what she's doing, walks over to the cat in a hurried angry way, grabs the cat, opens her patio door, throws the cat inside, closes the door, and looks at me and says "there, are you happy!" I said "yes I am, thank you" and I walked away.

I swear, there are some people who should not be allowed to own pets or breed children of their own. What a clueless, rude, ignorant woman. There are so many stray cats in my apartment complex because other dumbass owners feel the same way as this woman, and I know one day he is going to get one and it's going to be bad. People make me so mad!!!

I can see you being angry about the cat possibly scratching your dog. I hate cats personally. Especially stray dumpster cats. Im gonna stop right there though, just for safe measure. ;)

I wasn't gonna touch this one either ( hate cats ) I guess the right thing was done. Hopefully she will keep her cat indoors, doubt it but you can hope.

Honestly, most encounters w/ the public won't go as you've described, most the time you're going to have a huge target on your back and the best thing for you to do is be as responsible and in control of your dog as possible at all times. when an incident occurs the "lease regulations" will go out the window and most likely you will be treated as another neglegent owner w/ an out of control pitbull. All you can do is control you're behavior, never mind others.

Dude, the lady compliments your dog and you go there! You're worried about your bulldog getting scratched by a cat? Jesus Christ!

I can't can't comment anymore on this either!

Well I'll do my best, but with so many cats left to roam all day the odds are against me he is going to have an encounter. There is only so much watching you can do. If the dog reacts before you do and the cat is too close it's all over.

I know I can't change the general public, it's just frustrating. And for this woman to say it doesn't matter if her cat is killed because she'll "just get another one" is incredible to me. It's like a piece of furniture to these people, out with the old in with the new. And for the record I'm not a cat fan myself, I would never own one and I'm not fond of them in any way. I would feel terrible however if Sonic killed one.

The bottom line is I'm not going to muzzle my dog and I will watch him as best as I can and hope for the best. I know cats and Pitbulls is obviously a popular topic here, so I'm probably not adding anything new. Just venting.

  7. Where do you live? I am glad to see that some places allow our pets.... Here in California I am not allowed to have a pit bull in any apartment or renting situation usually, rare occasions happen when I lie...

    That lady is an idiot..

I was thinking the same thing...

  10. You know I thought the same.
This woman is smart and friendly. She accepts the laws of the nature 1.) a cat must hunt mice 2.) a cat can be killed by a dog. I have never had so nice and clever neighbours. What is the problem? Should the woman apologise for it she has a cat? Or that she was born? And, in addition .... you buy the best and strongest fighting dogs to yourself and then you write you fear they could be injured by a cat? Could you stop please? I cry! Tears run through my face.....:D

For whatever reason that lady didnt spin that conversation on you. She should have give you a good dose of that, would have been a good lesson to you. You should be thankful and find another rout to walk that dog.

Regardless of what other's do you are responsible for that dog and it's actions. Shortin that leash up and put a collar on, that is appropriate for that dog. Mind your own animal and those cats and old ladies wont matter.

Awwwww where is the love for all the little puddy cats???????? I have two and would never let them roam so I understand your frustration. But you need to sit back and learn how to "make friends and influence people".....My Grampa used to say "don't spit up, it falls in your face". I find the womans acceptance of your dog a good start...

Try again, good neighbors tend to be assets!!!!

I actually think the situation was fairly well-handled. The lady most likely let her cat right back out, but I'm glad something got said. All the OP really did was point out the law to the lady, and mention just some of the potentials. I don't see anything wrong with that. If it were a loose dog, most of us would've done something similar. But with a loose cat which falls under the same law, the Pit Bull owner should just shut up and go home, thankful that the lady isn't capping on him? There's a double standard at work there which I, for one, have never appreciated.

Ok I am a little curious about all these stray cats you keep seeing. Stray cats go feral rapidly and the one thing a feral cat doesn't want is for you to see him. I used to rescue cats and happen to presently own over a dozen, not my idea my husband is the cat person, I am the dog person, so I know how cats act. Also my area is a dumping ground for unwanted cats. They dump them about a 1/2 mile from my home up on the highway and by the time they make it down to my house they are so spooked and wild it takes me at least a week sometimes over a month to touch them. Of course once I can get my hands on them they remember people feed them and they turn into a purring bundle of happy cat. A homeless cat hears a dog coming and the cat is gone. Any cat hears a strange dog they don't know usually hides as fast as they can. It is a rare cat indeed who stays out in the open without it's owner around to confront a strange dog.
So my guess is these cats aren't strays but actually have owners.

I think the situation was handled well, but I would not have said your dog would kill her cat. Just that you never know what will happen, if a dog gets loose it could easily kill her cat etc... But I would not bring my dog into it or mention anything 'pit bull', as that can be used against you.
But I do kudos you for actually speaking up about it, because the law is the law and cats can be really annoying when they roam.
A personal hint though, I would change my walking route. You never know just how crazy some people can be and it'd suck if she left something out to poison him or something crazy. Be careful, people are idiots and the general public does not like our dogs.

when i lived in cali..the hardest part of walking my dog was dealing with people..the stares, stupid comments, and people crossing the street to avoid contact..not even talking about the cat part..to me there is just something about a woman that likes an apbt...wow!...very hot

  19. Yes i agree there is a double standard at work, and for good reasons. You cant compare a south russian owtcharka to a cat. I accept all the cats that run around my house but I wouldnt accept free running owtcharkas. Would you? Cats maybe shit a little and kill rats and birds. Owtcharkas would kill livestock, dogs cats and maybe people. And they shit mountains. Notice Iam not a catfriend and my dogs hate cats, but I think sometimes you have to be fair and objective. You talk about the law? And you tipe with your finger on the law and shout loud? Silly. Maybe tomorrow a law will cut your rights. And then? I tell you then you will say yadyadyadyada...unfair....yadyadyadyadyada...my freedom...yadyadyadyadyada.....revolution. Ok finally I can say I dont know this woman but I love her. She is cool and smart. There comes this man with 2 APBTs and the dogs try to go after that cat. And what did the woman say? Nice dogs !:D The man maybe thougt the woman would be scared but no...(shit )...then the man said attention my dogs maybe kill your cat! And what did the woman say? Dont matters to me then I buy a new...:D and the man:eek: well now he is pissed, because he has APBTs and nobody pays attention... ...now he makes something stupid...he says: Think about the L A W and put your cat in the house!! And what makes that great woman...? She grabs her cat opens the door and put she in. Then she ask the man friendly: And ...now all ok?......the man.. .....I love that story...thats great theatre^^ :D

great way to postitivly reinforce the breed in public....keep your "new pit" on a leash and there wont be any problems with it catching a cat or your "pit" getting a boo boo from the kitty. If you're concerned about loose cats call animal control.
