Weight pull and obedience at this point. I would say agility, too, but that's more like play.

Is that it? Weight pull, obedience and maybe agility? That is all that = a working dog??

Any responses would be very welcome:)

Hello again fellow Pitbull owners. This is a question that I too have wondered about. I guess a few may actually hog hunt but for the most part what do you actually do with your dogs that make them a working dog. We all know the original purpose of the Pitbull was to be the ultimate fighting dog and many here are devoted to preserving it in its' original game-bred form, but since dogfighting is now illegal (thank God) what do the owners of dogs that live in yards on chains actually do to keep them true to their original purpose ? weight pull, spring pole, agility? I see several different breeds that do well in those things (malamutes, bandogs,AMs') so that alone does not make a game-bred Pitbull, but I am honestly curious.
One member who I think considers himself a game-dogger referred to petbulls as dogs that just eat, lay on the couch and sleep and do other useless things. Does a spring pole or a treadmill suddenly take a dog from being useless to being a useful working dog?

My dogs do weight pull, tread mill, conformation shows...They flirt pole, spring pole, swim...My male does therapy work. During the winter, we use a wood stove for heat, so he helps pull the logs out of the woods to be cut and stacked...

  6. you answer that post with a question of "is that it?"

well peabody what might you do with yours? i notice you don't answer but seem to be critical of that answer. so what do you do? speak now or forever hold your peace.

your response would be very welcome. :)

i would actually love to see everybody answer this instead of hide in the shadows and avoid this thread like the plague.

my dogs compete in confirmation shows. to get ready they normally start working at least 5 weeks out. daily mill work, spring pole, lots of flirt pole, sled dragging. they get a very disciplined diet, all is measured and weighed. they receive daily suplements and physical rubdowns when they are done working on whatever we did that day.

in the winter we snowshoe ,, i make him chase me for miles by way of snowmobile (in deep snow not a packed down trail) now that will test a dogs gameness right there the first time we took the dogs out the dobie droped the rott dropped but the "pit" never stoped for the whole trip witch was about 5 miles by the by ....(dont think you have to be game to do it??? send me your dog well see if he or she can hang) and he was out of commision for three days after that one... if thats not game i dont know what is hahaahaha that auta stir the pot up a bit hahaahahaah

Yes Boogie, I did put 'is that it'. Those are all things that I do with my dogs. I didn't know that was considered a 'working dog'. It was not a 'slam' or a putdown on my part geared towards working dogs. In one of my other posts, I mentioned how I did a majorty of those things. My dog is not dragging logs in the winter, chasing hogs or swimming (he won't go anywhere near the water), but he is definitely worked. Weight pull, drag pull, bike riding (next to the bike), spring pole, flirt pole and some agility are all among things that my dogs do on a regular basis (not the pup yet, but he's getting some light stuff)

I have recently switched dogfoods to a better brand, am feeding more reasonably, and just started a few days ago rubbing down the dog's legs after workouts. (These things all things I have learned from this board by the way)

Chill out and take a paxil. The 'is that it' comment was put there because I thought there was more to having 'working dogs'.

I did not answer the post, because I was one of the ones (along w/ wheezie) that wanted to know what constituted a working dog.

Take a deep breath, relax, don't get so fired up about things.

well id just like to say it sounded to me like you were saying "working=matching only" so what ever it is what it is ....

and to your question... well IMO... id say working=hogdogging, matching, and you could probly say weight pull... but thats iffy depending on who you talk to they may dissagree... anything else such as the stuff i myself posted is all just preperation for something... match, catch,or show even....(in my case just generall fitness and a heathy lifestyle for my dog) just my input im sure some will dissagree...

any one can be A COP PERIOD. cops don't talk like that its ppl like me { been a arrested more than a couple of times} or ppl who smarter an think before they act and study their rights first. workking dogs in my opion can be different type of work: like constuction labor work and a office job 2 different jobs but syill consideredwork. my dogs work out from 1 - 3 in the morning pulling weight or me on a bike. not much but enough 4 me since there mutts the only game breed i had i had 2 put asleep a couple of days ago cause 6 months and he was a man bitter.

well, i don't know how much it counts, cause my dogs are not that good at it, but they actually guard my property. it's a very long story how thgey got to even bark at a stranger, and it's very weird cause they only bark at gipsys, cause in my area they use to steal metal, and my yard is full of that, so yeah, i could say they are gurad dogs :) . beside this, i also swim them, road work, some spring and flirt. now it's summer and i choose to swim them, cause they really enjoy it, i can't get them out of the water :)). so , for short, this is the kind of work my dogs do. sometimes, they like doing what lockjaws dogs do, in fact, i guess this is the perfect job for them :))

  18. well peabody i have no idea where you see i was "fired up" you are reading emotions into my post that simply weren't there. you over analyze too much into words and try to draw out emotions. try to stick to just answering instead of being a therapist. i stated what i did because from your "words" you seemed critical of what that person did with their dogs. hence...."is that it". you should have spelled it out a little clearer if you wanted to be understood better. you also say you stated these things in another post. where might that be? it's not in this thread. gee i guess everybody should have dug through all your posts in different threads to find that. if you need kissass points please try a little harder than this next time.

oh by the way mike vick and his working dogs made sportscenter again last night. good to see how the pet people are "ruining" the breed.

That's MY answer. I feed her, not anybody else. And I never said she's a working dog. I answered the question about what work my dog does. Springpole, flirtpole and running next to a bike aren't work. That's exercise and play. If we're counting things like that, then my dog does water retrieves, runs her treadmill, and things like that. (We had to quit the bike riding because the concrete was bothering her.)

I find that most people who scoff at things like obedience being true "work" have never tried to do top-level shit with their own dogs. There is a control and precision required that many people cannot attain. That's "work" in my opinion. "Work" to my mind is not strictly limited to running your dog as hard as you can, pushing their bodies. The work that Loki does could probably actualy qualify her as a service dog, if I had a need of one, and those IMO are true working dogs because what they do provides a tangible function.

this is actually the kind of work i was talking about, maybe i worded it wrong but i wasnt talking about what all conditiong activities wou do wth you dog i was more talking about agility, ob, frnch ring, schutzhund, wp, pp, things of these nature. something that you must spend time learning not just plain exercise.
