I am in the process of fencing 2 1/2 acres, so I feel your pain. After extensive research I finally went with 5 foot welded wire. It is about $100 for 100 foot roll. Used t-post every 8 foot or so and a cattle gate at the driveway. Attached the welded wire to the inside of the gate so the dogs can't get out. When that is done will have electric fence with a solar charger just to keep them from digging under or jumping on the fence. It will cost about $3000 when finished but is less expensive than chainlink or privacy fencing and much more stable than some cheaper options. Hope this helps!

I'd go taller than 5', probably a min. of 7-8'. However, I also wouldn't fence the entire property. I've got just over 2 acres here which is surrounded by 5' fence that surrounded the property line when I bought it, but it's worthless outside keeping strays out. Dogs can easily bound over it, or bite threw it.

Have you considered a cable run? 50' cable run, with a 12 foot chain, is more than enough room for any dog.

if you're talkin a sq 2 acres ....you're lookin at 832 or so feet in fencing. IMO i'd run 48" field fence with 3 strands barb wire on top to put the height at 6ft. You can get a 330ft roll of 9 ga field fence for about $250 @3 rolls $750
6ft round wood post pressure treated @$4 I'd put one evry 50ft: $70
    Heavy 6.5' ft T-POST every 6.5 ft @ $3.50 =$448
    10 bags concrete @ $2.50 $25
    Gate panel wire reinforced $150
.....you can do the 2 acres for under $1600

a nice wall is good thats what i use.but it will cost you a little more or in some cases a lot more but to me it is well worth the extra cost.

440rider, Your going to have to use longer post to get what your talking about. Around here alot of junkyards use sheet metal walls, you might check into that. It looks like heck, but dogs can't chew through it, or jump it if you go high enough. I personally feel like 14Rock, fencing the whole thing right will cost a fortune, just pick a nice sized lot. Best of luck, Mouser

  11. anyone tried invisible fencing?

I've seen dogs clear a 5 ft. fence without ever touching it. Puting a hot wire on top isn't going to keep the dog from going over.

I agree with 14rock here. I'd fence in a smaller area with 7-8 ft. privacy fencing (& call some friends to come over & y'all do it yourselves ;) ), and then fence in the full area with the 5 ft. fencing.

We've got approx. 3/4 of an acre fenced in by 8 ft. privacy fencing. We were lucky in that our neighbors on each side had already put up the side fences, but we had to do the back stretch. Then we went back and actually double-fenced the sides due to our OEB sticking his head through the boards like they were made of spaghetti. Add to that some hot wire (aka electric fencing run by a cattle/horse charger) along the bottom and the tops of the fence and a concrete trench underneath the majority of the fenceline and that's our yard.

Did it put us back a few thousand? Yep. But in return, it has provided a safe yard for "thousands" more.

invisible fencing is no good! Might keep the average dog in,however it doesnt keep other animals or intruders out of the parimater.

  14. yea that shock coller with the wire you bury isnt about nothing they are like 250 bucks and when they come within like 5 ft it will zap em but all my dogs just ran through that

TRUST ME !!! Invisible fencing is a big no-no for this breed. Been there, done that, have the neighbors vet bills to proove it.

My brother tried the invisible fence with his black lab. The dog figured out that if he stayed close enough not to get buzz by it, it would drain the battery and then he could go right through...
My neighbor tried the invisible fence with his rottweiller, and that dog figured out that if he ran right through it would only hurt a tiny bit, and then he was home free...

the welded wire roll fencing you can get at most co-op's and places like home depot are useless. i wouldn't even reccomend the welded gates either. use chain link or a wood privacy fence that was built with the utmost integrity in mind. going cheap or half ass will lead to problems in the future.

  18. lol good job sharing your experiences gaowner. glad you're still trying to learn more!

They slapped ordinances on us about fencing. The fence has to be a min. 8ft. chain link and the dog still has to be on a min. 50ft. run with a chain no LARGER than 3/8ths. That won't hold a determined dog. You can opt to keep them in a kennel but only for no more than 12 hrs a day and you still have to have the 8ft fence. Keeps everything in, and out, but it is expensive. Then again, if you do it right the first time you won't have any problems.

if your going to do this on the cheap.......may I suggest just using posts (8" x 8') I put 3' in the ground and end up with a 5' fence, then posts every 20' (I put 3 t posts then a real post).......after the fence is up I run a hot wire about 10" off the ground and another line about 4' off the ground.....you can get a solar charger for under a $100 the wire and plastic spacers will only set back less than $50.......if your lucky rather than getting new pressure treated posts ($10-$15) you can get used rail road ties (I've seen them as cheap as $2 a piece) they are awsome and will last forever.....anyhow I hope this helps.
