Feeding after workouts

How long do you wait to feed your dog after exercising him/her? I've heard everything from "don't wait more than 15 minutes" to "wait at least a half hour." I'm trying to tone my girl up and slim her down for some events in July. My first inclination is to feed her soon after she's done while her metabolism is still up, but I don't want to make her bloat or anything like that. Also, does what you feed make a difference in how soon you should feed it? Raw vs. Kibble?

    Any input would be great.

I personally won't feed a dog until an hour has passed after a hard workout. If we just went for a light stroll around the block, I'll wait about 30 minutes.

One common factor that vets all across the country have found in dogs that present to the clinic with gastric torsion (aka bloat) is that the dogs were fed immediately before exercise or immediately after. The overall cause of bloat is still unknown so we must go by the common factors that accompany gvd cases & classify them as risk factors.

I always feed raw after a workout and usually around a half hour to 45 mins. after depending on how long it takes the dog to cool down.

I've mixed some plain Whey protein with some chicken broth and water to give 10mins after the work out, then wait an hour and feed.
By giving a little whey protein about 10mins after, let the dog calm down a bit and get some protein into the system to help prevent to much muscle tissue break down and to stimulate growth.

That's interesting. Never heard of whey protein. I'll have to investigate that.

well what i always did was feed a nice dry kibble, with a high protein low fat content.and i waited till the cooled down.and by cool down i mean quit panting and showing any signs of a workout.always just watch your dog and feed when he cools down other wise you run the sik of bloat and such.and as far as feed just a high quailty will do,if your feeding a good feed that he does well on to begin with just stick with that.

Whey is one of the best forms of protein, it is taken into the body super fast and is great for post workout and even pre-workout.

When I'm coming home, I give a call to my partner to prepare the food. The food sits during the cool-down, rub-down, and weighing.

what ways do you cool the dog down

well cool down means your just letting the dog catch his breath and such, just like after you work out you go sit down for maybe a hour or so and catch your breath and quit sweating and such.same goes for a dog.i always took mine to a room with no other dogs and let him just lay down catch his breath, give him a rub down maybe a nice drink, praise him for a job well done then when he shows no sign of a work out i go and get him some feed.then i will leave him in the room till morning if it was just a work out or if he was in a keep he would stay there till i was through.the reason why i kept the dog in a seperate room after even just a workout was for the simple fact that bulldogs rile up around other dogs and i wanted him as quiet and relaxed as possable.that way he doesn't over tire himself,he gets the full benefit of the work out and the rub down.

It depends, but I always walk the dog nice & slow for a bit until the breathing slows & the dog begins to relax. I offer a small amount of room temp water during this time. Once I feel he's "cool" enough, I will give a rubdown to help the dog's body rid of the lactic acid buildup. After this, the dog is kenneled & offered a bit more room temp water. Once the dog is completely cooled, I will then feed him.

How much Whey do you give after workout.

  17. Feeding after workouts:

The purpose of waiting to feed after a workout is to allow the dog's body to continue burning internal fat (backup energy source). It also prevents a dog from taking in too much air (through panting) while ingesting their feed. If you want to give some water (no more than 8oz) soon after, mix it with Creatine. This will help his muscles recuperate much faster.

In a keep, i would aim to use a kibble with as much fat content as possible. As some of you may know, FAT is a dog's primary source of energy. Protein in feed, is use to CREATE muscle tissue. Carbohydrates are also a source of energy but has the side effect of making a dog run hot fast (depending on % in feed).

After the hard workout I give food after two hours. But before that I give water with some meat broth (2 cups) or some liver (two cubes of 2-3 cm in size).

What whey protein do you use? Human grade you can pick up at GNC? Or what else? For a 75 lb dog, how much would you give?

Human grade from GNC is fine. Stick with natural or unflavored. Definitely stay away from chocolate flavor. I would give a scoop after a hard workout.
