I'd never keep my dogs in something that small...especially all day...how do they get any exercise?....or is this "pen" for city dwellers.

  8. The pen in 7'x3' under roof. The house part is 3'x3'. The pic is small had a hard time getting big pic loaded. and yes if you are in the country you dont need a pen this small. Where I live this allows you to have a dog in a safe spot off the ground. I have sold over 20 of this design in the last six months so maybe it is a local thing to use. 75lbs is the biggest I would put in this pen. most of the dogs are under 65lbs

It looks like it might be more appropriate as a whelping pen?

It is more like a outside crate with more room. one could use these to keep the dogs out doors and put them on a lead or chain, work them when they are at home. Even at night I can see that these may be very useful. especially in gator infested areas. My dogs don't do much on their chains till I get out there and fire them up and start the days training schedule. Nothing wrong with using these if you want to secure your dogs up and out of the weather, and from the easy sight of others, have a small yard and so on. I have seen them used. If the right material is used they are easy to clean and sanitize as well. They are great for pups. Keeping them up and dry helps keep them parasite free and reduces chance of parvo. No the shots do not always work.

But it is true most people do make their own but I am sure there are those that don't or can't. Maybe don't have the time or tools to do so. I can't see the small pictures to tell how well these are built.

Maybe if yo put more up in your gallery we can get a better look at them.

I just noticed the price. If I had need of a pen that size, I would buy one for $200. Big dog crates can cost that much.

Hell - they look good to me. I would purchase a couple myself if I where in the area. If you can't understand what something like this could be used for I guess then comments are better left unsaid. I think the idea is safety and enclosure. Other than that if you can't use one than enough said.

There is a kit that you can get for $150 and the floor is made out of non pourous materiel(means you can sanitize the thing). You just cut up some 2X4's and put it together.
I have two kinda like the photo above for whelping pens. One is wood like that, and the other is metal. I like the metal a whole lot better. And if you think you can truely sanatize the wood, you are mistaken. Wood is pourous(means it has pours which allows bad things to get into it).

I have never seen one used for anything other than a whelping pen, but I am a country boy, so we have the room. It would be a bad thing for me to live in the city, I believe there may be a law about how many you can have per household.

Well I beach the crap out of every thing anyway. wood or not I am killing some bugs and germs. I suppose you could make it out of wood and line it inside and out with FRP. I like that better than sheet metal. As sheet metal conducts heat more than the dense wood would. You have enough shade trees about like I do so whe can get away with sheet metal roofs. I still use insulation when I build the dog houses. I have bought some of them pvc dog houses this past year and to my suprise they are rather effective in staying cool in the summer and somewhat warmer in the winter than just plain wood. You're going to have to build some if you put that dang reptile in the pond. That is iffen you don't get fed to it for getting it. lol

I think there are a few ways to disenfect the wood. I would recommend using something which would protect the wood from absorbing but probabaly the best advice I could give would be from professionals who use wooden lined barrels to ferment their brew - be it beer or whiskey.

They are just wood for the wiskey. usually oak. use them for so many years then discard.

you can use tung oil to seal wood, polyurithane. oil. I think I would go with polyurithane.

Was speaking of something like expanded metal for the floor, and of course you'd want it in the shade!LOL Love my shade trees! I bleach everything also, and lime, but the wood will not get clean like the metal will, you know that. Where I am no insulation needed, main thing is not to get the dog house too big. The bigger the dog house, the more body heat it take to heat up, and the door need to have a bottom lip and on one side. Of course my barrel houses are in a different situation, I cut them 18"X18" Squares in them and put some flaps for the winter. I cut the holes in the tops of the barrels, that way in winter I can take the lids off so they can get more air. My wood dog houses are 48"X 20". I cut a pallet in half and use it for the bottom, the roof is at it's tallest 20" and slants down with hinges so I can get into it.
I am still tryin for the gator. I am in the dog house now, so dont really see what it would hurt to get it! I'd like to watch it out in the pond. Watch how the thing would stalk it's prey and eat.
Bulldozer, the only way to truely disinfect a wooden surface would be if it was covered. In you analogy you said it all. The beer/ale/whiskey barrels will always have it in the wood, because it is pourous. Be kinda like tryin to clean toilet paper. Cheaper to throw it away and start over. That is why I love my barrel houses. They clean very well. And the reason I stressed this concerning a whelping pen is that obviously the pups will be poopin and peein, and the mama will be doin the same on the porch of the thing.

Heck, kresso would be even better. Pine tar, something like that. At least then you'd have the property of repelling some unwanted critters.

  19. yes we use bleach and a hose to clean the pens. They are and have been in use here for years. I am a carpenter by trade and took a few designs that I had seen and improved it. The wood stays cooler than metal, we're in FL. I have not had a dog get out of one of these. With locks installed you can keep unwanted ones from getting to your dog. And yes you can get a kit somewhere else but for $200 there is no where you can get a pen or cage like this. The retail on the materials alone is over $120. I will create a better flyer for online. thanks for the input. keep it coming, and yes I have dogs too this is a pic of "Patches O' Houlihan" that is water not pee on the floor, he was 56lbs

Those are the kits I am speaking of. Wood must be allot cheaper here, as believe I spent 40 or 50 bucks for everything to build mine. Instead of chain link, I used Hog panels, which are way stronger. You can get a 16'X52" piece for about 16 bucks here, which is plenty. You can get it with the 2"X4" Squares. I am sure that those you are building are worth the money for those who arent carpenters. I have been on the books as a journeyman carpenter for 16 years, so I do have a clue.
