Just wanted to share these. I know some don't think APBT should be competing in agility or off-lead obedience, etc. But them that think that way can bite me. :D LOL. We have a blast doing this! And I'll win or lose with what I have, rather than replacing her with an easier breed.

Also, I had about a half dozen people come up and say how very cool it was to see a Pit Bull doing this kind of work, and how she should be the poster child for the breed. Agility is one of those family fun events where people bring their kids and stuff to come and watch the doggies. Its great PR to see this breed holding its own against the border collies and other lightning-fast dogs that flood the sport.

If you have off-lead control and an athletic dog that can focus, I highly recommend agility. I'll be doing it with all my future dogs whose brains don't fall out when I take off the leash. :)

i think agility is cool because from what i have seen is the dog has to well trained and really enjoy and appreciate there owners and be very focused if yours can do it i wouldnt see a problem with it as long as after the run they are contained properly for the close quarters in the holding areas etc. nice dog

  4. I would like to teach magyar to do that, but there is no one around here that does agility does anyone know where I can find someone to help me train him for it.

Hey great pics of the dog. I like to see pics of working dogs like that.

I am glad to see someone else talking about off lead obedience because most people think you can't train a APBT for off leash commands. Right now I live in a tight packed neighborhood(though hopefully not much longer) and there has been a few times over the 11 years here where I had to stop my dogs in mid charge at other dogs roaming the streets or being walked by neighbors. I say NO, and STAY and my dogs stopped in mid charge before they got to the other dogs and came back to me. Other people walking their dogs have said they wish their dogs listened to them that good as my dogs listen to me.

Good Luck with the agility trials/shows.

call around to your local obedience training places. The place we took our girls for obedience also has a full agility course and does training for it, and hosts AKC agility trials. The trainers encouraged us to get our girls into agility, and we may someday.

Thanks everyone. I was anticipating some criticism, but I guess I jumped the gun. Heh.

Sedalia, there's going to be a UKC agility trial in Springfield in July. I've already emailed the club and asked if there's any possibility of moving it out of the BSL town, but no reply yet. If nothing else, they'd be people to get in touch with and ask questions.

You know your dog better than anyone so if he/she has the qualities for it, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it....
As a matter of fact, when the time is right this is what I might be doing...

One thing that helped was that we didn't start training for agility until she got her UCD title, part of which is off-lead. By then I'd seen that she was going to have no problems taking her cues from me, so we might as well try something more exciting. She thinks this is way better than obedience or weight pull.

GREAT job!!! She looks like she loves it too!

I just wanted to add that working a dog off lead in an agility trial & walking a dog off leash in an uncontrolled environment are two different things. ;)
