Awful weekend

So the weather was absolutely gorgeous this weekend, so I decided to tag along on a hog hunt with my oldest brother & a couple of his friends. He took 1 of one Miakoda's siblings (from the same litter) & I brought Ol' Dan (the stray Catahoula) to let him get some "hands on" practice as a bay dog. Well, we were running behind the bay dogs as they were on the trail of a hog, when they cornered the thing. We released the 2 catch dogs, Brutus (a Catahoula Bulldog) & Zydeco (Mia's brother). It seemed like seconds afterwards that we heard some crashing through the brush as 2nd hog took off & Ol' Dan took chase. Instead of going in for a hold on the hog already bayed & being held by some of the bay dogs, Zydeco took off after Ol' Dan at full speed.

I took off after them with my brother while the 2 other guys took care of the remaining dogs & the hog. It didn't take long before we completely lost the dogs.

We searched all day Saturday & into the night & wen out again yesterday. Nothing. And that piece of land is approx. 500+ acres of heavily wooded brush.

We're headed out again today with a bitch in heat to see if we can attract the dogs back (Ol' Dan was neutered, Zydeco was not). I know it's probably a foolish idea & farfetched, but it's all we can think of besides actively out walking to try & find them. Thankfully, my brother & a friend got permission from the land owner to camp out overnight.

My heart is broken. Losing a dog sucks. It sucks when loose a dog to death, but when you know they are alive somewhere & lost to boot, well, it gives one a feeling of despair.

I can only hope for the sake of the dogs that they work together & not have at each other. The only positive part of this is that the land is privately owned so he regulates who is out there hunting. He put the word out there to others not to shoot the dogs (which is common), but to try & bring them in.

Just keep your fingers crossed.

I'll try to update you all, but I probably won't be on much this week until we find the dogs.

 

I'll keep you in my thoughts. We have lost a dog before & it is does make one despair. At least the land owner was kind enough to let you camp out. Perhaps the female in heat will bring them in.

OMG thats terrible, i lost my pup for 15 mns once, it was dark and we live near the woods and he didnt have his collar on..I almost had a heart attack, i know the feeling! Hopefully they come back

Mia, we lost our girl Kiki on a hunt one night. She and a friend's dog (Cayenne) were gone for over two weeks. Kiki found her way back home-she was half starved to death and missing her collar, but she made it back alive. Good luck on your search, I'll say a prayer that you find them...

Mia my dad used to coon hunt, he would lose dogs sometimes they wouldn't come in he would take off his coat and leave it on the ground where he last seen the dog, then come back the next morning and get it

You might try that also, just get and old coat or something with your scent on it and lay it out there

No luck. I just got back from running to Cole's doctor to pick up some stuff, but I'll be heading out in about an hour. My brother & Earl have already set up a tent & they are on dirtbikes (4 wheelers can't make it through most of that area) scouring the woods. So far they haven't spotted anything.

I just am worried now about what if those 2 dogs tried to take on a hog themselves. Some of those on that guys property are close to 500 lbs.....more than any dog can handle alone with human backup.

I won't be back on here tonight unless we find them.

And to make matters worse, my younger brother's 14 year old lab (his bird dog) has gone downhill (he's got cancer so it's somewhat expected), but he has gone offshore for the week with work so I've got to take Hershey in tomorrow morning to put him down. This day totally sucks for everyone in my family it seems.
