Cat Food For Dogs?

Can some of the more educated ppl here tell me why you don't feed canned cat food to your dogs. I would not do this because I've heard you shouldn't, but my husband want's to know why not. I don't think the ingredients in cat food was meant for a dog. Thanks for any correct info.

 

It will damage thier Pancrious(SP), due to higher sodium levels. They love eating it, but eventually it will cause cronic pancrieties(SP).

 

Thank you. I thought it was the pancrease also but wanted conformation.

 

Protein is also higher in most cat foods

 

plus, can you imagine how much it would cost? I know cat food looks inexpensive, but, its not.

 

LoL, you think CAT food is expensive-try feeding your cat TUNA on a regular basis! We had a stray hanging around here a couple weeks ago that looked about half starved. I eat tuna sammiches like it's going out of style and since we don't already have a cat, the tuna was seemingly the most appropriate cat food in the house. 94 cents a can for Chicken of the Sea (light chunk in water thankyouverymuch)! I must have fed her ten cans of the stuff in two days! Poor thing was SO hungry. She took off though...hate to say that she may not have lasted through the icy weather we had recently.

I've never thought about cat food for dogs, but I know dog food for cats is a bad deal. Makes them go blind? I saw it on some AP show.

...cats also need to have fatty acids in their foods, something dog food is void of, (called arachidonic acid). also the vitamin A source for the canine and feline is different. Canines can convert the carotenes found in fruits and vegetables, due to their biochemical processes, into vitamin A, where felines cannot do this and must have their source already preformed in animal sources.
so yes, as stated, felines CAN eat dog food, however it is not recommended, as dog food does not meet all their nutritional needs, and ultimately, in the long run, it is more harmful than helpful.

and vise versa= cat food does NOT meet all of a dog's nutritional requirements.

 

Cats also need certain levels of taurine in their diet. Cat food is high in taurine which is not good for the dog.

The cat food lacks certain vitamins and minerals that a dog needs and vice versa with dog food for a cat.
