HI folks, anyone here jog with their pitbulls?, I recenlty started taking my Achilles jogging along the trails with me and encountered a couple of problems, he just has to mark his territory every couple minutes, wich really upsets me , because im trying to get a work out lol, he seems to pull to much at the begining of the jog, when he sees a jack rabbit passing by, he gets crazy and have to literally stop so he can calm down, he uses a 2" collar and leash when jogging with me, I been reading here, and could it be that a prong collar would be a good idea in this case?. thanks.

Ps, Today i decided to jog by myself , and jogged a greater distance, didnt stop, but I would like to give my apbt a workout aswell.

also just started walking/jogging with my male as well. Yes, Prong collar all the way. We run on a road next to my house without a lot of traffic, and every mailbox, trashcan, etc. he has to stop and piss. I use a 6' lead and he usually runs out in front or on the side of me. When he begins to stop I just pop him real quick and tell him "lets go" or what ever works for you. By now i usually dont have to pop him any more just the verbal command of "lets go" and that gets the job done.

side note: he is used to the prong collar and knows when it goes on that its time to pay attention. you may want to work him with the prong collar prior to running, just so that he knows what to expect from the collar.

When I run with Diesel I keep him in a strict heel position. He cant leave my leg for any reason, now with that in mind you need to give him a "break" so that he can do his business too, but it definately makes running much easier. He is not running from side to seid or around my legs, and it gives me a chance to see and distractions first as he is slightly behind me.
I would work on heeling for abit first, by doing fast 180 turns whenever he get out in front. it teashed him that the only way he can keep from being corrected is to stay back and near you. it doesnt even need a command and takes literally just a few turns for the dog to catch on. Once you have him in a good heel running with him will be a lot easier for you and lead to more and better excersise for the both of you.

You need to teach your dog that walks/jogs are just that. I would try the prong around the yard and do like Sam-I-Am suggested. Let him know what it's all about first. Before your jogs, I would suggest letting your dog have some "pee" time. You have to warm up before a jog anyway, so let him warm up too. When on your jog, don't let him stop to pee. Pop him with the leash or correct him with the prong. More than likely he is just marking his territory anyway, he probably doesn't really have to pee.P.S. If you have never used a prong collar, please check out some info before use. You can seriously hurt your dog with a prong if used improperly.

  7. Hey dog-man, i've had exactly the same problems, and i started going by myself as well, just recently i've taken him again though, about the last month or so...What i do is, i say "Do your piss" or something like that, next to a tree before the run, and whenever he strays from Heel position to mark territory (during the run) i just say "No piss" because they don't NEED to get rid of that Urine, he learned he got only one chance to do his Pee, so he takes advantage and has really started to empty out before the run.
I think it's all a matter of learning the routine, hope this helps some, lol it becomes fun after a while, i used to despise my workout now i enjoy it, because my buddy is with me, lol, i run around a 400 metre track 8 times, instead of running a trail, and during every lap at the exact same time, he looks up at me, with his smiley face, and gets real excited, i have no clue what for, but it looks so funny and makes the workout much more enjoyable, no matter how gassed out i am.

All theese people using prong collars? I never have/ never will. If you train him properly a prong collar isnt needed. No choke collars either. For an easy solution a harness(dont like em either) or gentle leader would be a start. You also have to be VERY assertive and consistant. DONT EVER let him stop to mark if you dont want him to. Just pull the shit out of him and continue on without even looking at him. The 180 trick works well too.

Thanks for everyones advice, I jog every other day, and Achilles just missed one day, Im already mising the lil fellow on my jogs lol, I will give it another try, will hold out on the prong collar for now, if it he really needs strict correction I will use it.

I use a gentle Leader on Legend. It works like a charm. He never used to pull but over the last couple of months he can really rip my arm out the sock. I am now starting to alternate between the Gentle Leader and his regular collar.

But I do use a rubber tipped prong collar with my GSD. She's very aggressive and I can't take any chances on her hurting a dog.

While the gentle leader is a great tool, it has just as bad of an effect on joe public as a spiked leather collar does. I got sick and tired of people asking me why my dog was muzzled and if he bit. People would literally run across the street when they saw him coming with that thing on.

I do like the effect of it though. Personally I love the prong collar, it makes corrections much more effective, and its not like you will use it all the time.
Put it on for training and then go ahead with a flat, or slip collar unless you need a touch up and then you can do another training session.

I swear by prong collars, used properly there is nothing wrong with them.

    Update.....................

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions, after that one day of not jogging with Achilles, he was back on the trail next jogging day, missed da lil fellow, he still pees like every 10 min or so, and act like a axe murder when ever he sees a jack rabbit around, but the acting crazy around other animals is normal behavior for pitts I guess, the thing of Achilles peeing often is getting to me, i have tried several times, yelling at him NO!, but by that time he is half way finished and i end up sort of dragging the lil fellow, when i jog with now , i use a much smaller leash, 4', it helps a bit to control him on his peeing, but sometimes he beats me to it, and he does get the NO! and get dragged, I have even tried to make him pee, at the begining of the jog, but I will not wait his precious time lol. If he keeps it up, off I go to the em a prong collar, drastic measures , for drastic results lol.............:)

me too. short leash. no room for marking and/or sniffing
initially, she has "her" time, then I have mine. it took a while at first, but all's I give is the "look" now, sometimes followed by a firm tug on the leash, but not very often, and she knows to keep pace.

  17. I jogg with my Pit 3 times out of the week at the park i use the prong collar works well for me my Pit even help me lose 40 pounds in 10 months!!!

    Re: Update.....................

He brother is he just marking or full out pee'ing? Probably just marking territory. Shouldn't need the prong deal. I use a short leash and just don't stop they can't pee on the move normally unless there is a bladder problem. Sounds like he isn't doing a complete void (urination).

I jog and hike almost everyday with my dog. He gets two days off a week but every other day he's on the road. He too was like your dog; always trying to take a leak, until I started using the prong collar. Someone here said that they would never use one because if a dog is properly trained you won't need one; I disagree. Some dogs, though very well trained, see going jogging, running, or hiking as their fun time and can be very stubborn. Thus, they do things that you don't want them to do, such as marking. My dog is very well trained, but he needs to me reminded that though we are taking a stroll, he is on my time and not his. I don't use the prong collar everyday now, only when I notice that he is needs to be put on check. This is a bit late so I hope you and your dog are now enjoying your runs together.

I jog Achilles on a really short leash 4', I do my best to correct him as we are getting close the the small bushes (his fav place to pee), but sometimes , he will slow down and still take a leak, for those of you that jog your pitbulls with a prong collar my guess is that you fully train your dogs before you jog them right, otherwise you could cause a lot of damage, pitbulls dont give a damm sometimes lol, especially if they see a jack rabit, i get lots of those in my runs.
