I used to let my little 28lbs stafford go into raccoons we came across when I lived in Santa Barbara. He was a young dog at the time (almost a year old) and he killed 3 of them, two of them being a bit bigger than he was. I'd guesstimate they were right around the 30lbs mark. He never got too banged up.

I stopped though because, like someone already mentioned, not only is there a high incidence of rabies in raccoons but there's also coonhound paralysis. Its a pretty nasty neurological problem transmitted by raccoon saliva. I believe its thought to be a protein in raccoon saliva that causes a crazy immune response. There's no cure you just let it run its course which could take weeks to months. That was enough to turn me off. So be careful with those coons.

around here the only coons i steer clear of are the sickly ones out wandering around in the daylight...i saw one last week down by a creek i take my dogs to and i knew something wasnt right with that one. otherwise i love barnbusting with a dog and a pistol. climb up in the loft with your dog, a flashlight, a pistol and let em have it. just watch out for them mamas...they are the nastiest coon youll ever run into

Yep, one of my old females used to jump in and grab possums by their backs. Once she put some power into her bite and started ragdolling it was all over. She was a small dog but never got more than a few scratches really. The only animals that really gave her any trouble were raccoons, depending on the size I wouldn't let her get into just because I didn't want to deal with a torn up dog. One of my uncles tests his young bulldogs on them, if they can't do the business with a coon they're outta there.

A coon will mess up a non-working dog, with the quickness. As far as opposums go I mentioned it in another thread, but as bad as you want to see them meet their demise, it is good to leave them alone because they take care of rats, and snakes; even Rattlesnakes.

possums are about as nasty as a 4 week old kitten bud, and i aint seen a coon that was any test for a decent dog. go find ya a badger, theyre a far better scrapper than any coon, but they still aint what id consider proving a dog by any means.

Yeah I agree, like I said he just tries out his young dogs on the coons as a little test to see where their heads are at. Those dogs are only used on hogs and varmints as far as I know.

better have your first aid kit ready...she should do OK but she will definately see some lacerations and punctures....do not undersestimate ol' ricky the racoon...he can handle his own...and if he lures her onto a creek or pond...it could be bad news for the dog....US1

I used to live in Missouri where coon hunting is a religion. Been out several times with buddies and there hounds mostly Plott. A big boar coon aint no joke, they will straight up tear apart most lesser dogs. One guy I knew had a big rough plott that could handle any coon he came across, but he had the scars to prove it. I dont think any real bulldog would have much of a problem takin a coon, just to much intensity and bite for them. Even that big ol Plott wouldnt go into a coon full bore like bulldogs do.

14rock-are you serious about the opposum, my family blue heeler dog would bring those home all the time, ya they got sharp teeth, but when confronted they play dead, then when a dog goes into kill its to late for them to defend effectively. Thats why its called "playing possum"

yeah we coon hunt this way alot too,but i don't think any dog would have a chance in the water with a coon:D

i think with coons hesitation is what gets the dog banged up the first time my buddy talked me into lettin my dog get one he said jake wont have a problem killin it but dont freak out its gonna be a fight big yellow back coon jake ran full into it dust flew and he shook the hell out of it no fight at all see a coon will size up a dog and if the dog moves in to slow well the coon can get his licks in but if the dog barnstorms it it dont got a chance....

first of all start with a clean dog give him a good bathing then get your coyote the dog will do the rest they got sharp teeth so expect some cuts mostly superficial no real power in there bite most important thing is to have some medicated dog shampoo after i dont know about your area but fla. coyota have some nasty mouths also make sure rabbies are up to date.most importantly make sure your dog is ready he shouldnt have a prob.but if he does its not somthing you really whant to have to put your hands in ...
