Cedar Shavings!warning!

I thought I would let everyone know what I have found. One of my dogs has had a real flea prob this year. I have sprayed and sprayed her chain space with no luck. Finally I had to just move her to another space. Well yesterday after feeding time i went to the old chain space and was looking around. I took a look in the dog house and started to wonder something. I started spreading the shavings around and my suspicion was right, my arm came out covered in fleas! There must have been the biggest flea nest ever in there. I just wanted everyone to have the heads up. Ive decided to only use cedar in the winter, and leg houses empty for the summer.

Next time someone says fleas are allergic to cedar, tell them otherwise!!!!!

 

I use cedar shavings... never had a problem. Its better too keep the smaller pups off of them so they wont ingest them. I dont have a flea problem so I cant say if they work for those.

 

I also use cedar and havent ever had a problem.I also use the garlic powder in there food though.

 

I also use cedar shavings or mulch, and have never had a problem. I recommed it to customers at work all the time.

 

I have a ? how often do you change it, if it gets to old and the ceder smell is gone it could happen, I had a really bad time with fleas this yr also

 

Marty beat me to my reply.I have used lime around the perimeter and cedar shavings in the houses and the holding pens and I' ve never had any problems.But if the cedar is left in too long without being changed out,they become broken down and ground into the dirt and mud that is brought in by the dog.I myself have been having a really bad time with fleas this year,which has never happened.I think the weather and Katrina has screwed everything up.

 

I had the same problem last year tnob. I had a nest of fleas set up right inside an open bag of cedar!! And what's worse, not only will fleas set up in cedar, but they breed like rabbits in there! When I disturbed the cedar, I literally had hundreds of fleas on me in seconds! It was awful.

I don't think it had anything to do w/ the quality of the chips - in my case they were still in the bag from the maufacturer & the bag was in a place where weather could not get to it.

I think it has something to do w/ the chips being undisturbed for a while. All seemed well w/ the pups when I poured some chips in their pen. Didn't see any fleas or anything. Only when I came back a few weeks later to scoop a cupful of unused chips out of the cedar bag to use for mouse bedding was I attacked by the fleas.

 

We use cedar shaving in the houses without any problem. Last year we had a terrible flea problem but I put down about 150 lbs of salt all through the yard in the winter and seem to have elimated the problems because I have only seen 3 ticks all year and no fleas. I'll do it again this winter!

 

So any one know wat else should use for fleas besides cedar to put on the ground and for my dogs

 

do any of you have concrete-floored dog spaces? if so...what do ya'll use to treat the cement. i still hold true to my burger-balls for internal insurance (acv, garlic, ground beef, etc)....any ideas?

 

I have had bad luck with cedar shaving myself. I had to shovel it up all the time and replace with new c edar chips. Must be consistant

 

I use cedar as well but clean out he dog houses once a month and put in new. four times a year I spray the whole farm down with bleach water. In between those times I spread hydrated lime down. Plus I have some birds loose to eat the ticks that do make it in. Oh when I am spraying with the bleach(industreal strenght) I get all the houses and runs. Put your dogs up till it drys Bleach can cause burns. But it kills worms, bugs, parvo and many other problematic issues with the kennels and farm. I hate bugs. Up at my buddies farm I am going to nuke some bee's next weekend. I'll teach em to sting me and make me sick. He and his wife will freak but I am burning that area down. Nothing will ever live in that area again. Little bastards. One thing is if you have a flea problem now what ever you use to kill them make sure you do it again in 14 days I believe for the larva to hatch and kill those before they breed or you will be wasting time and money. You have to stay on top of bugs or they will take over. Oh with the lime spay it down with water so that it doesn't form dust for the dogs to inhale or you for that matter. It isn't good for ya. It will make your kids born naked or something.

 

I change them and bleach every three days in the puppy pens, topping off with a fresh layer eryday. I spray adam's flea spray on and around the entire pen since its best to keep repelents off pups until 6+ weeks. system works great for me, like clock work. worming with strongid 2, 4, 6 and 8 wks- pups stay clean and healthy.

 

Now that has me beat for sure. I am a bleach user too. Good stuff. Same worming schedule. I alternate stongid and nemex till 6 then use ivamectin. My welping box is inside the house in my laundry room so I can control the climate and pests. I go through lots of news paper but it all goes into the compost pile for the next years garden. Good stuff .
