My neighbor and I have been talking about going to the lake alot to condition our dogs but there is no open water in close proximity. So to make things easier, we(more like I) am wondering if buying a poly tank would be considered safe and a good idea as long as the dog is under supervision of course?

Here's a 100gallon one, but I may go with a 50g if it would be enough, not sure:

  2. it sounds like a good ideal. I,m going to wait to see what kind of replys this thread gets to if I,m going to try that.

My neighbor said he's gonna get one sometime this weekend and I want to see how they work in it. I'm sure at first you gotta coax them into it or do what he says he gonna do: just throw them in and watch'em go............lol

  4. let me know because I was thinking of purchacing a treadmill and if it works I would go that route. Also I got a friend that is going to be making me a jimmy where I can work 4 dogs at once.

well i really dont see how a dog is gunna benifit from this except to cool down on a hot day i just really dont think they are gunna be able to "swim in place" but ive never tried or seen so i guess ya never know ...

on that note what i have seen work is one of those back yard pools its just a outside with a plastic liner and surprisingly enough they are affordable there is a little bit of set up but its not bad ....dig the perimiter of the pool set the out side and then lay the plastic... but this is just my opinion someone else may no more about your idea i just dont see it working .... now if im wrong please keep me posted on how it does work....

one more thing the pool i did see with a dog set up was about three feet deep and the dude used a flirt pole to keep the dog going and the dog LOVED IT so again good luck ...

The purpose is for it to work like a treadmill, only there is no bottom for them to touch down on, so yes they're supposed to swim in place or hell they can try to do turn arounds if they wish. They sell them big enough so the dog can't get out but the dog has room to move around, that's what I like about them. Those little pools I think you're talking about are easy for the dogs to get out of unless you'e speaking of something I don't know about. Oh and yes it will also cool them down while working them out. Like I said though they make them pretty big and it's cheaper and easier and a better workout than a mill, IMO.

Heck, I use those to bath and dip my dogs in. Not much swimming room there.;)

Build a pool? When I buy a house, not ready though. I guess you would have to see the tanks in person to know they can fit 2 dogs in there. They have different sizes ya know?

now again this is just my opinion but i think unless you put the dog in there as a puppy his main goal would be to try and get out and if hes forced to stay and swim in there i think it would create a bad experince for the dog and then he would relate that tank to something bad

i just really dont think the dog will be able to figure out why the heck hes in this little tank ... now a pool well theres swim room so thats play time for the dog where as a little tank (unless used for bathing) is just to closed in and i really think it would freak the dog out cause he couldnt touch bottom and everytime he tried to get out he was pushed back in because your thinking of "working him" now i dont know if this was your plan its just how i "pictured it"

as far as those pools well the guy i saw use one always had to pull the dog out so i dont think there would be any fear of him getting out untill playtime is over

now again IM NOT JUDGING just trying to help this is all JMHO

Well I wouldnt recommend using this type of conditioning measures on a pup in the first place. How could this any different from securing a dog to a mill and enticing it to run? That's why I said it needs to be supervised. Pushed back in? That sounds harsh. Hold your dogs favorite toy or treat in front of him/her just like if they were on a mill and time them. 15 minutes. The methods are the same, but like I said swimming, IMO, is a better way to condition.
Like I've said I've seen them before at the feed store but never thought or even knew the real purpose of them and still don't but I see now what they could used for towards excercising. I like the idea personally and will et you guys know how it goes.

I use a two hundred gallon one. drive to post in the ground and nale a post across to hook a harness in place just like a tred mill. Never leave the dog alone, watch it every second. Don't let it become exhausted and asparate on water. Works great. the smaller ones let the feet touch the bottom and are not really wide enough or long enough. Get them at a tractor supply or feed supply. those rubber made ones are five times the price of a regular one. And the regular ones last lots longer.

alright but let me say one thing .... i would only put a pup in to get him used to the whole idea of it in no way would i condition a pup like that (ie..) bath the pup in there, play with the pup in there, put the pup in there and let him cool off on a hot day... just thought id clear that up ....

and good luck let me know how it works its kinda hard to get the whole point of your idea with out seeing it first hand maybe then i would agree a lil more [IMG]

My neighbor was talking about getting the metal one, but I like this one since you can easily drain the water. I didn't see that on the other ones. Of course there will be supervision, my dogs are my kids, know what I mean. Thanks for the good feedback!

I wouldn't condition a little pup in a tank but starting about 5-6 months I would start getting it warmed up to it. Then start hitting it stronger at a year and full out at about 18-24 months.

Expand your mind in the sense as if it's a treadmill, only it has water and the dog is using more of its' muscles. Just like that, see!

That is too funny. All it took was a reputable member and BOOM........ you understand. He said the same thing I had been telling you but maybe you didn't want to hear what I was saying. It must be that selective listening, we all have it, don't we. I can't hear you.

I said they come in different sizes too! Attila is actually just using one that is 100g more.
This isn't the first time I see people jump on the band wagon here. I'm not mad at'em though. Like I said, I think it's funny.
