This is how it has always been. It is in every breed. There has been and always will be someone who can sell ice to eskimoes.

I know I am hard headed. I do try to keep an open mind. But, people will be hard pressed to ever convince me there is a correlation between price and quality.

A purely fictional story to help make a point.....

I may be biased because the best female I have ever seen was bought out of the newspaper classifieds for $150 by a young kid who pawned it off on his grandma. The female would climb a 10X10 pen before the lady could turn around and latch the door. The dog would then come to a friend's house who had a number of high price/high end dogs. The stray wanted to play and his dogs did not. The lady asked him to take the dog but he had no interest in a newspaper dog but she offered the dog, the 10X10, an igloo house, a couple bags of dog food. worm medicine and a set of papers to boot...for free.

Angel then finished growing up and worked her way to the front of the yard. She went out 3 times and left 3 RIP. And on the off days she ran free with two Australian Shephards along a river bank rough housing and play fighting like normal dogs do.

Maybe I am just cheap too.

However I can see paying a chunk for a winning dog, or a dog that has already produced, especially a proven female. For me that is justifiable, but to pay $$$$ for a puppy is a stretch.

But to each his own. It takes all kinds to make the dog game go around.

  6. Yeah.big gamble to rare a pup anyways.even worse to pay over the odds for one, specially a pup.....if I had them,I would rather give them to a working dog person for free!rather than sell them to any one who's got the money.just because you got chunks of money to spend in a pup, doesn't necessary mean your gonna do right by it.I would rather give it away for free to some one who's keen/passionate,then sell it for all the money in the world...........

I agree. Me personally, I have not bred a lot of dogs over the years as puppies/breeding/brooding just takes up too much of my time. If I breed two dogs it is because I have chain spaces available. If I have more than the number of chain spaces in the litter I place them. Usually the placing is done in return so when a space comes open I get a pup from a buddy. Then I do not have to breed the next time around. This works for me but is no way a recipe for all.

With that above post out there, I am not advocating searching the local classifieds for the next great one either. Ch Angel was a freak of an animal. Freaks do not come along very often. She was a double freak because she was a scatter bred newspaper dog and maybe a triple freak because she ended up as the string attached to get a free 10X10 and igloo dog house. That will not happen every day.

If I were out shopping I would pay more for a puppy that is from known producers. I do not care the public's opinion on the breeder and his selling abilities. If he has two known producers and the dogs from these dogs are out there running up and down the road I can see where that price tends to increase. What I can't (and maybe better said 'will not') pay for is a puppy off a super duper inbred dog who did something in the 60's or 70's. I can't pay top dollar for yesterday's heroes when I am looking for what has to be done tomorrow. That changes slightly if there is a direct link between said dog, the breeder and said puppy, but still I can't ever see me paying $1500 plus for an 8 week old puppy.

Granted, there will be a ton of really good dogs I miss out on because I can't/won/t spend that kind of cash on a puppy. Same with shipping. I will pay for what I see not for what I am told. If dogs are not within my weekend travel I miss out on those too.

If I had $2500-$3000 to spend on a dog I would not spend it on a puppy. I would find an older female that has already produced. Spend $1000-$1500 on her. Find out what she throws as far as traits. Find the very best male that is somewhat related to her, not super close, but similar in families, similar in styles and similar in traits. Use the rest of the money to pay his stud fee. Raise the first litter to see if I really wanted to be in the dogs. Pick one or two and keep them. Sell the rest, which usually gets one out of the red in the money department. Find another closely related male to that female and do the same. From this point you can 1/2 brother 1/2 sister breed your dogs forever. You will always keep the hybrid vigor but by selecting traits in each dog you will breed somewhat consistently.

A life time of dogs for less than the cost of the 8 week old puppy.

  9. Great read slim12.....your right.two t three thousand on a pup is mental.it would have to come of some serious dogs for me to pay that!don't get me wrong,I would pay double evan triple that for a well proven grown dog.But for a pup?I personally would not pay more then a thousand.........

Everyone involved with Zebo said he was a man biter. I think Mnt Man said he had his wife feed Zebo with a hammer in case he flipped out.

All apbt are not as friendly as the breed standard would have you believe.

Luckily in all these years I have only one that I had to deal with that issue. He was fine til he was about 20-24 months. I feel like they all give a sign at some point and a lot of times the signs go unnoticed. I did not notice until he made sure I understood his intentions.

Every other dog I have ever had would load up and go with anyone that would pat them on the head and give them a ride. They absolutely love people.

But I agree it is not a perfect world.

I have 2 that'll leave with you but if you don't know them will make you think you're gonna die. They're strategically placed on the 2 years in and out. Having dogs with no stranger danger is a chore. I also keep 1 dog around(not a bulldog) that will hit anything on 2 legs he doesn't know as a deterrent.

  19. I agree with the top part.I have one the same.he only went like that at the age you just said to.he's 100%with me and my close loved one's(or I would kill him).but any one else?forget it!very dangerous.not for the faint harted!that said.he keeps his cool when handling him(focuses on the hog).he's the only one of the bunch like that.he's old.he's wicked,he's learnt me more then any book ever could.he's a hell of a dog(was).and I love him very much....but dam!what a fucking headache to have a dog like that.I mean who needs it?I personally don't.as I said I love him to bits.but I don't need a gaurd dog.there's plenty more breeds for that....and a game dog as a guard dog is just plain dangerous.but he's old now.very old.and he's been with me a long time.I no his in and outs.but it's something to luck out for in the future.because it's a lot easyer to have them friendly towards people.....
