I prefer a loose dog to kennel or lead. Even in the country as I am it don't work. I have hog dogs. I also have wild hogs that come close to the yard. The last thing I need is a dog caught at 3am 1.5 miles from the house. I had 3 pups 6 months old in a big 20x20 pen. They barked a lot and stayed stressed. I got my knee spots fixed yesterday. They are far more relaxed today with less running. I have no doubt they are happier now than in the pen.

Hey Laced Wit Game that set up sounds great. Just what I was looking for, I was also looking for an alternative to axles, being as those are some what hard to come by for me. Would definitely appreciate a couple of pics.

Total newb here so please forgive what may be a dumb question. Looking forward to starting a small yard in the future and got lots of tips here. As far as housing, would you guys recommend barrels over wooden houses? Seems the barrels may offer less protection from the elements but may last better in the long run. Any housing recommendations for a new guy planning a small yard?

It depends on the climate where the dog will be...A barrel is fine in the Deep South where temps below freezing are rare to never. If u have snow and ice and freezing winds regularly , I'd recommend somethin else....

How long any type of house lasts is up to the dog. Some dogs wont touch a house. Some will destroy anything you set up for them. I've went from platic barrels to wood houses to wooden houses wrapped in sheet metal. Even some will find a corner or edge on the metal wrapped houses and work on it till they can chew on it. Its hard on thier teeth but even a plastic barrel will wear thier teeth down after awhile. My son has a bitch that will bite a barrel on the side continuously till she gets a hole in it where she can chew it up. She has ate three barrels, a plywood shade board, and most of a spare tire over the last few years. She has a metal wrapped insulated house now and teeth wore down to the gums but still gums the hell outta her house when excited.

That is annoying as f*ck. I hate it when dogs just won't stop chewing everything. I muzzle those ones most of the time.

Your dogs are muzzled 24/7? You can obviously do what you want with your dogs, just wondering. Mine wouldn't be able to eat or drink with a muzzle.

Laced do you put the stake near the dog house or is the house at the end of the chain ?

I try to place it where the dog can get behind the house but not all the way around the house

Thanks.. I've been thinking about a chain set up instead of the kennel.

Not 24/7. Just most of the time. I give the mad chewers raw frozen bones, but if there are none left the muzzle goes on. They can drink with them on.
