When I say stand up I mean be in control. The fact that the dog is growling when u take it from him tells me he is the boss. If not he wouldn't growl at u. When u take something from him put it down close by and every time he makes any move toward it be it with his body or eyes correct him. Stand over it and own that object. Ur dog lacks discipline regardless if u admitt it or not. One day it is possible u will pay for that lack. Him growling at the ones that feed him is a sign of this to me.

You are probably right Shotgun. I don't know the exact circumstances but that could lead to something regrettable.

Well Mike, I don't know, to be honest, it seems like taking the long way round a simple issue and confusing the animal in the process. Rewarding for dropping an object and then correcting for picking it up? I'm with ursaminor!

  3. I might not be explaining myself good enough.
If he is heading towards something that I think he is going to to take, I will say no leave it and reward him if he does.
If he already has something. I will say drop and reward or play with him. BUT I also at random times when he is playing tug or something and I say drop it and reward or exchange for something else. I dont just do it when he is stealing something. But it is hard work and you have to be consistent and I try to always have something on me for a reward but I feel that it gives me a pretty reliable out command.

  4. i will try this from now on and hopefully see some change in him cuz he is a great dog, sometimes i think he does it to claim things from my other 2 dogs but i might be wrong.

  5. im sorry i must not have explained my self well or said it the wrong way because he only growls when i take it away as my other 2 dogs are always behind me, when the other dogs are upstairs or not around he doesnt growl at me. He does have discipline and listens very well when it comes to his food, him speaking, rolling over, very resposive to not going after other dogs and can let him off the leash with out him running away but when it comes to the house and taking things he doesnt listen. i can leave human food such as a whole chicken on the counter and he takes and wont even eat it and just wants to hold it in his cage... thats why i dont know what it could be and he has toys that he can take with him but it seems like it has to be clothes, shoes or a house item that has our smell on them.

Like it or not u have a problem. It should not matter how many dogs are behind u 1 or 40. If ur the boss he does what he should without the growling. U need to get a handle on this before it becomes a real problem

  10. he is gonna be 6 next month and yes he is off the leash and doesnt leave our side even if he sees another dog on the street. when u tell him no he stands right next to us and listens very well thats why i dont know why the collecting in his cage is so weird..

  11. i know i have a problem thats why im here asking around :) . he listens all the time with everything else and takes commands from us but when it comes to collecting shit in his cage his a dick about it .. i guess i just wish i knew how to fix it because taking back and telling him NO is not working.

A dog will always be a dog, keep him on a leash, it's for his protection as much as the other dogs around him. As far as training just redirect him and reward, make sure you catch him before he steals your items, redirect him to a toy, a tug, food or praise for doing what you want him to do. If you're having problems with positive reinforcement, redirects, and the leave it command just hit a local basic obed class.
