What do you guys use on the ground. Everytime i go out back its like a dust storm, and when it rains its all muddy. What do you all put down in your chain spots to keep the dust down and help with the mud in the rainy conditions?

Ive been lookin into the rock dust sold @ the local rock quarry. I know Marty uses this and IMO looks more appealing to the eye...

Here's a old pic of mine showing Rock Dust or Screening on the ground. I like it a lot. You can look at some of Marty's pic and see more.

I agree! I have natural earth and you are always raking up unwanted material out of the center! And i have 3/4 gravel too and i think it is to big(not to comfy to liedown on).
that stone-dust looks the comfiest for the dog and on the eyes!

    chinasmom or marty,

How thick do you lay down that rock dust? Do you just pour it out and rake it down? Or, do you press it down with something?

Does the chain effect it, like dig into it?

I am looking for a suitable material to put in my chain spot and dirt is not cutting it. . too dusty and can't even use it in the rain because the dogs are covered in mud!

    I'd appreciate the help.

I had it hauled in and dumped. Then we shoveled it and racked it out. It's really heavy and lasts a good while. Chains didn't disturb it at all. The dogs dug in it though. I think mine was about three to four inches deep. I need to get some more now actually. Mine is about all gone.
It's really cheap, about 13 dollars a ton if I remember correctly. The cost of having it brought in was expensive though. Maybe you know someone with a dump truck as they won't put it in a regular truck here.
    Hope this helps you some.

I called around and was told that no one sells "rock dust" in the area. . . they told me coarse sand would be similar. . . what do you think? They want $75 a ton!!

My boyfriend works in concrete though and he thinks they have rock dust there he could get. maybe?

You get it at a rock quarry. There happens to be one about 25 minutes from me. They call it "screening." It's almost like a sand, maybe heavier??? Sand could work, but I don't know how long it would last. Maybe someone else could help you there...

dont use sand...ever had sand in your eyes? the difference is you can get in the shower and wash your eyes out-the dogs cant do that. plus it gets blown by the wind-stick with the rock dust and you will be glad you did-

I called all the quarries here and they had no idea what either screening or rock dust was. .. Maybe they're stupid!?

I have always had good luck with bank gravel. Its cheap,it packs hard and wont hurt your dogs feet.I would not use any kind of concrete dust, washout ect as there is way too many additives that are harmful to dogs.Stay away from sand or course gravel.I would not use any kind of dust as your dogs are breathing that stuff 24/7 and that cant be good.

It's not really 'Dust". Just the slang name for it. It's more like sand and very small crushed rock. It works just fine. Here's a picture of what it looks like close up with the use of a picture of one of Marty's dogs.

As you can see, it's more like sand.
