hmmm... i suppose i look for phenotype as well. things like teeth, head size, depth of the ribcage on parents. head shape. then i look at temperament. if a dog is human aggressive i won't go near it much less feed it. i would definitely need to see the parents. know how they are bred etc ( a dog with good wind combined with a good mouth is a dream). then i would probably ooh at muscle tone. i have alway loved a muscular dog. but lean muscle not body builder muscle. finally i look at color. i personally think color i definitely important. i prefer a nice looking dog as well. i personally fine black, red (liver) , seal, and chocolate dogs attractive. especially if they have a white blaze on the nose or a chest spot. sounds vain but if i'm going to have this dog, hey, might's well have it look right. of course color always takes second place to functionality and temperament.

Your SWAT team neighbor is a A55h0*e! I have never known a single dogman or breeder that would let you bring a bullhorn (or a cop) to help pick out a pup. I just learned that pups that run from VERY LOUD BULLHORNS are MAN BITERS. GTFOOH
Maybe you should bring a started dog and just give the pup a l"ittle" bump. If he fights back and lives he is a good one if not? WTF REALLY.
I REALLY HOPE YOU ARE KIDDING with this stupid post. SERIOUSLY! You must be growin "ROPE" on that farm of yours that the cop is unaware of and partaking often!

I like that picking them up thing also,,, I like a pup that if put on thier back they roll quickly to thier feet and if you obstruct that way they switch the way they roll,,, a good center of balance and the want to be centered that young seems ideal...
I also liked the cornerpup/runt that seems to crawl further first and usually walks first,,, they seem to show alo more will to survive than the others...

But usually I pick them on the size of thier heads and thier color of thier coat if I can get past the pretty pedigree,,,and champion lines... lol...

I do basically the same. Sometimes I'll bring a flirt pole with a rag on the end and check out their drive ie which pup goes after it hard and really wants a piece of that rag but the basic temperament is the most important. I avoid shy/nervous pups like the plague

The only thing I can tell about pups is color & sex.
    It's more of eliminating what I don't like .
Hold on to as many litters as you can & go thru every one in them. Sometimes nothing turns out regardless of breeding.
Other times all may turn out & the few with the least problems are what you put back into the family.
If you are real then keeping whole litters are just apart of the game. truest way to pick out the best in a litter.
If buying from some just a crap shoot.
I let the breeder pick out what they want to represent them because it's there name behind it.
If it doesn't meet my standard then it won't be apart of the program.
When all is said & done you only know the sex & color when it comes to pups.

I definitely agree that it depends on the dogs purpose, house pet,or performance dog? I am always drawn to the more outgoing, active puppy in the litter. This usually works out but sometimes this is not ideal for a house dog as they can be too hyper. I steer clear of the withdrawn, human shy pups whenever possible. Also It helps to know the family traits when evaluating the pups. I prefer the pup that was the first to walk around and explore its surroundings, the bolder of the group you could say. Using phenotype as a tool I think also works but this is more important for the breeder than it is the working dog owner. Lines that are known for high quality black dogs can also produce excellent dogs of other colors too of course but if you are breeding I suppose you want to weed out certain phenotypes for the sake of consistency in future litters. Having a family of dogs that look alike and act alike can simplify things as they will most likely have the same preferences for type of work and have the similar strengths and weaknesses.

We keep them all so no picking, when I do pick one I look for health. The rest of the chips will fall as they may

Consider a pup from known blood/breeder I will look at the litter and find the best lines physical traits check the rear for hips etc. ., then ask questions Like the last one I picked were while talking one pup climbed out of the cage breeder says that ones a pain in the ass always gets out find it on my couch every morning while the rest are in the pen together on a piece of card board ..I just found the smartest pup in the mix and all things being equal I want a dog that can think while he /she is "Exercising "

Sometimes a pup will stand out from the pack because of some physical or temperamental reason (i had one that was walking on all fours at 3 days old) and that's the one to pick. If they are all really confident and similar in structure then close your eyes, spin around 3 times and point. The one you are pointing at when you open your eyes is the one you take. That's about as technical as you need to be. Like Ziggy explained, keep the whole litter ensuring you will own the pick when they mature.

...the one and most important thing when choosing a pup is...
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>... the character of the person you choose to get the pup from...
...an honest person will always do you right and take care of you if your not happy...
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...SO CHOOOOOOSE WISELY...

That is good advice from Elias.....

Do everything to put the odds in your favor. Going to a knowledgeable and reputable breeder can do just that.

Shopping at bo-bo's-r-us will more than likely get you just that.

I agree with you in that retrospect as that should already be a given, but this topic is not about choosing the qualities of the breeder, its about choosing/picking out the qualities of a pup in a litter.

I let THE BREEDER choose a pup that he/she wants to part with...
    Is that BETTER???
But honestly,,, I stick the pup on my puppy mill/ turd conveyor and see if it can shoot a turd or not,,,
see I m working on a mill with and extra long belt that YOU can point at your window,
the big series is for those who like emills to walk their dogs and dont care to take them out to empty,,,
the smaller series is for chiuhuahuas that cant hold it and the owners dont prefer to come home to
a house thats full of feces pads and kitty litter,,,
you thought your tea cup companion was pooping bigger,,,
but really my pup is shooting them in your window,,,
SHUT IT,,, or buy both series turd conveyor mills and SHOOT BACK!!!

That is not what you meant in your other post about the breeder, it seems you are changing it up to correct your self but at least your new reasoning is on point with this topic. LOL

All you had to do was admit you was wrong , how hard is that Elias? Instead you had to write a whole bunch of non sense jibberish that just makes you look like a RETARD. LMMFAOROTF
