What qualities do you guys and gals look for when purchasing or picking out a pup?

I was told to pick the pup that strikes your fancy or catches your eye. After I choose the pup i like to take the pup to a unfamiliar spot and see how they act. If he is still spunky I'm feeling him, if he or she acts kinda funny I pick another if I can. Also I look for the loner as he maybe set in his on ways, what about the runt in the litter. Or maybe you pick the one that resembles the parent. This may sound stupid I always want the pup the kicks his pop over with grass or dirt. How about you, how do you choose them?

i try to interact as much as possible over weeks with the pups to try get a good feel over the whole litter and each individual. Then I check which pups seem to be confident and neither scared nor complete loners from people. I like a dog that wants to bond with people but not totally reliant on people (kinda hard to explain that one) also I look for pups that seem solid structurally not that a person can tell much at young age

Four legs, feet, a tail, and preferably a head. With a mouth so they can eat.

I use the same technique the police use when picking a pup. Proven method and has always worked for me 100% of the time without fail

My closest neighbor is a swat and a dog handler he showed me how they chose a dog years ago...when the pups are between 6 and 8 weeks old you go up to them with a bullhorn blow it off as loud as itll go at the pups. The ones that run off scared and shit themselves are your manbiters the ones that just stay there and stay calm are all sold to familys. Im no friend of the police btw he is a neighbor and has always been decent to me if he knew what i was really up to on this farm id be gone for sometime. This is my method it has worked for me

Marvel is makin movies with all the REALLY GOOD back stories. Seriously. I wouldn't do that. I'd think it damage theirs ears or somethin. If I don't know the parents I let the breeder pick. I trust him enough to deal wit him, so why not to pick my pup? If I know the parents or other family memebers I pick like AGK said

I look for the most confident it could be the runt but if it has spirit and heart than that's the one I want I don't care about the biggest pup or the biggest head or chest as long as the pup has heart and spirit that's the one im going for

I like two types of pups...
For house dog qualities I like a pup thats not the shyiest or most outgoing, a balance inbetween the two and when i place them on thier backs, they forfiet to me...
The other type is the runt or corner pup that usually has to crawl and walk first sometimes having to go some distance to do so, survivor instincts that seem to carry on with them as they mature...
In these two styles I also look for phenotype of certian dogs from the family but make sure that thier are multiple phenotypes to choose from and not tighten the
genes in a couple generations but rather a couple decades...
because I breed boyles blood, the three phenotypes I am interested in order... Hank, Bolio and Eli...
I feel if we isolate one phenotype we will be missing out on the other and when outcrossing the family we choose the other families phenotype to keep for ourselves and give our phenotype to them in hopes of longergevity, but who knows...
We feel that if we keep thier phenotye and breed it back to ours it might lossing it up, but if we keep ours and breed it back it can only last so long...
History shows these issolated traits dominating the bloodline in Mr.Boudreaux black eli dogs and alot of the red redboy and buckskin jeep families also...
We believe breeding for the next decade instaed of the next litter and these two different outlooks are what sets family breeders apart...

Great post everybody, all are great ways to check and choose a pup. I don't know about the bullhorn and watknots but what ever works for you. PISTOLA that was a very interesting post. It all makes since, and knowing the family and their traits makes it a no brainer ,hoping that the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree. I totally agree with breeding scheme as well, I've used this method myself.

You mean breed the pups from the same litter, but with different pheno, together? By that I mean breed a Hank "type" to a Eli "type" from the same litter? Inbreeding on paper, outcross or linebreeding in practice?
