after u have the dog this is good equipment that you should purchase

    1. A good dog house (unless u live in climate that is warm year round aviod plastic dog houses.

    2. car axle tie down ( i make and sell a good tie down that is also a great also and i personally perfer them to car axles, but most perfer axles for the fact they are readily found)

    3. a good swivel i like the 5/16 or 3/8 size swivel (only one is nessary but one below colar and one close to the tie down is best)

    4. a nice strong chain. (this does not have to be overboard thick and if u can afford it stainless is better. use your jusdgement on what u think is best when it comes to thickness i like the 3/16 stainless chain best)

    5. 2 quick links (4 if you use 2 swivels to atach the chain to the tiedown and at the dogs end to attach the chain to the swivel and then to the 2-3" WELDED Oring for the collar)(when it is were needed weld the threads so it cannot open- all u need to do is tack weld it to ruin the threads so it doesnt unscrew)

    6. A 2"-3" welded stainless O ring (MAKE SURE IT IS WELDED) the collar is fed through this and is better than a snap as snap srings can rust out and your dog can escape)

    7. a good 2" collar (use nylon, the more plys of nylon the better) it doesnt stretch like leather does and is less likely to allow an escape than leather cuase it doesnt stretch or expand and contract with the tempeture)

    8. Food/Water dishes. u can buy some big plastic ones from walmart and fill them with concrete or u can buy stainless steel bowls for about 10 bucks each (get the biggest size u can)

i spend about 150 - 175 for each dog set up depending on price flux of supplies and materials.

the only things that should ever need replaced would be a dog house as would will rot eventually. i make new ones every year or 2 depending on its condition. but a rule of thumb if it looks heavily worn buy or build new asap.

  3. Good weight pull equipment is...a well made harness, a drag chain and a bunch of window weights. My drag chain is about 6 to 7 foot in length. I've currently got 2 8 pound weights and several 4 pound weights. I've added clips to the weights so that I can clip them on to various places on the drag chain. Oh...you'll also need a decent size area to train the dog in.

Everyone trains differently and there is no "one way" for weight pull training :)

my bad i thought u ment for a dog in general. i clicked on the new post thing on the top of the page. i dont know shit about wieght pulling as i do not compete in dog shows or wieght pulls. they are just nothing that ever caught my eye as something i would want to participate it. but at the new jeasy adba show it was impressive to see those dogs haul all that wieght. but just not for me.

A flirt pole is something nice to have, its fun for you and the dogs and can definately be used to condition a dog...

I competed in weight pull and the euipment you need is basically pretty simple. A harness fitted to size for your dog,a good crate to keep him in while you are at the show or in the handlers area waiting for your pull couple of dishes for food and water and of course a nice lead and collar to walk him out with prior to pull starting. I would also keep a good 100lb hanging scale in 1lb increments around to make sure you make the weight class you are trying for. Things you need to get him ready are a bit more costly but you can actually get him ready with some kind of simple drag weight system just to get him or her used to having something behind them and once you clear that hurdle and if he or she likes it you got it whupped. Hope that is of a lil help?

Im not so sure the DABA eill allow an altered dog to compete?

  9. The ADBA does not allow altered dogs to compete. I do UKC, IWPA and APA weight pulling with my fixed dog :)

    I see, and I meant A.D.B.A.

  11. I knew what you meant ;)

  12. what about a carpet mill or something of that nature?

  13. The mills are just for general conditioning. It's not a requirement for a weight pull dog. It helps to get their muscles worked but if you're out drag training every day with your dog it's not totally neccessary.

  14. last time i checked you cannot compete an altered dog.

  15. So should a person just walk the dog to keep it fit or would a Mill work better for getting it fit?? Not into the pulling thing just want a nice fit looking dog..

I do weight pulling and I start my young dogs out with a small wagon after they master the drag weights. Then they graduate to my sanctioned cart which is 200 pounds .I use our bench weights for the cart.

Where do you get your wagon from? I'm looking into getting one in the future when Jaha gets to pulling that much.
