My APBT frequently applies a little bit of resistance when walking in the leash. Not enough to drag him but enough to annoy me after about 2 mins of pulling him. I tried changing speeds but it gets worse if I go faster and he bites the leash when i slow down. Any thoughts?

Give the dog time, I presume your talking about the pup in your avatar?
Just let him bea pup, no big walks, just lead him round your garden where he comfortable until he used to the lead

when my mutt was about 2 years old i had problems with her trying to chomp through her leash while we were walking if she saw another four legged animal. i took a piece of deer hide i had lying around the rolled it tight and duct tapped the ends. still to this day when i take her out i give it to her and she keeps it in her mouth nearly the entire walk.....i give it to her after she empties out. that alone seemed to have its own benefits, but the point is try and make it engaging for your pup, not so much work. just circle your block a few times if you live in town and most importantly let your pup be a puppy.

    good luck.

Try using hotdogs to get him to follow you around.

Do you have A collar on him at all times? You have to get them used to the collar and leash first. Walk him around the house before you head out to the street.

There was a time when he would not even move on the leash. we have progressed all the way up to a normal walk for the last 3 weeks. all of a sudden he has these spurts where he just resists in the middle of a walk. I think its for no reason because when I stop he he then keeps moving. I have had dogs all my life and have never run into that. Patience it is, Thanks.

Teach the dog that walking is a good thing. When he/she follows you praise them for it. Also, try shortening up the leash so that your holding it up above their head. Just like you would if the were heeling. Then its easier on you to tug at them and they'll probably get the point that they need to follow you on walks. I had some similar issues when I started my dog on the leash because as a pup he just followed me around. Then his balls dropped and he started runnin around everywhere. Luckily he never wants to get too far from me but he'd get far enough to pis me off. LOL

there are alot of factors as why this happens. How far, and frequency are you running/walking the dog and type of corrections are you applying. A dog that is pinned up, or tethered the majority of time will get excited and would wanna go go go all the time. Like Chucho said Patience and also correct him when he is pulling and not supposed to. Stay on top of it, you have to be firm and consistent, also give him some PULL time.

    Good luck!!

I have a dog here now that's doing this and usually when trying to cross the street! lol I just get in front of them, walk backwards, patting my leg and encouraging in a higher pitched voice. Usually does the trick. Crouching down to their level often gets them to come at you as well, although that's a little tricky to do crossing a busy street. lol

My one dog did this the first couple of times I walked him.
Do not pull him, he will associate this with punishment. When my dog would do this, I would stop, talk to him, let him know he was not in trouble. Once your dog realizes its actually fun, he will start pulling you!

The easyest way i found to teach a pup to follow and walk with you is to use an older female dog. The pup will follow a female dog. That has worked the best for me. As far the bitting the leash spray it with that bitter apple stuff, maybe that will work.
