Under the collar bumps

Well Dixie has what feels like a small grouping of pimples or something on the underside of her neck. It is right underneath her collar. They don't seem to bother her at all when I mess with them. But I've been letting her go "naked" (no collar) in the evenings when she is inside so that they get some fresh air.

    Is this quite common?

Also, what should I be doing to help them go away. They are not open sores, and you can barely see them through the fur. It's just concerning.

sounds smart to be taking the collar off.. I dont really know , but I would venture a guess, that it can be from friction / heat in the area of the collar.

Is this a new collar or did you change something recently .

I personally would try to leave it off as much as possible and monitor it, if it gets worse i would head to the vet....I would also consider changing collars.

this is my inexperienced guess ;)

It's a fairly new and rather clean collar, but I'm about to order some more from Stillwater, so I will go ahead and get her another one anyways.

Stillwater has some good collars. The leads he sells are nice and sturdy too.
I'd say keep an eye on her. I would keep the collar off as much as possible. If the bumps spread to other areas, take her to the vet. Champ recently had small bumps in his ears, within a few days they spread to his stomach. I ended up taking him to the vet and he told me it was an allergic reaction to something. He gave him a shot, some antibiotics, and a cream....within a few days it cleared up.

Phantom gets these often. Its where they are pulling against the collar and it is rubbing them. I talked to a vet once about them because I was worried. He told me to let him go "naked" and to put the spray hydrocortazone on them to help them heal quicker. He said it was just where he was pulling on his collar! Good luck!

Edit: It doesn't matter what kind of collar. All of my collars come from Stillwater...it is the dog pulling...

Hmm... I guess I could get some spray hydrocoritzone for them. And keep an eye on them. She's got no hair loss around them or anything. I really wouldn't have even noticed them if I hadn't been rubbing her.

Do dogs just get heat/sweat bumps?

They don't sweat...so I'm not sure. I believe its just where their skin may be a little more sensitive under the collar. Phantom's havent been getting as bad because all of his "loose skin" under his neck is starting to go away.

We loosen our dogs collar. BTW, what kind of collar is your dog wearing?

She's wearing a 2" triple ply from Stillwater.

Try a harness. Some dogs can get irritated by collars.

harness's are only good for walking or working, they aren't meant for tying a dog out with because a dog can pull out of a harness trust me i know my dog did while he was running once.

And she's not tied out either. She's got her crate that's dang near the size of my house. :)

But I am building her a setup for trial.

Oh damn then its probably just a rash from her pulling like everyone else said. Just get the spray and it should go away

    Pulling on what? LOL

She doesn't pull on walks anymore. Took a year and a half to break her of it, but she finally got it through her thick head not to pull. LOL

I called the vet, who is in surgery and supposed to return my call, on what he might think also. He's very good at helping me out over the phone isntead of saying, "bring in the dog so we can charge you an arm and a leg..."

Anywhoooo... his response was that it just sounds like irritation. He said he has seen quite a few cases where dogs develope a reaction to the nylon on the underneath part of their neck, and suggested finding a leather collar instead.

Also, put CortAid on the bumps or something.

Leave it to me to get freakishly over-concerned. :)

Thanks all for your help and suggestions!

Glad to hear it is nothing too serious. I had that problem with Champ when I got him. He scratched like crazy at a nylon collar. I switched to leather and he still scratches at it some, but nothing like the nylon. My vet said it's normal for pups to scratch as they are getting used to the collar. But, I still leave it off as much as I can, I guess I am over obsessing, but I usually do. LOL

LoL so I'm not the only worry-wart! Woohoo!!!

I wonder if the padded collars would work better. I really like the nylons because they are durable and don't stretch like leather does. If the padding is covering the sensitive area of the neck....hmm I might try one of those too. Especially if we're going to try tying her out.

Its rubbing period...if she scratches her neck on the collar, boom, theres a pull...just moving around in general. I just take the collar off when he's inside or sleeping with me.

Molly got the same on the side of her neck, they dont scratch and they dont get infected. My vet told me that it is because of the heat. They go away after a day or two. I mix 1 drop laveder oil, 1 drop chamomille oil, 1 drop tea tree oil with 9 drops olive oil and rubb it on the spots, just in case.

Sweetie gets the same thing, all collars do it, but I find it happens the least when she's wearing a choke collar in the house. Loose enough I guess. I find that leather makes it worse. If it gets bad I give her a bath with a lavender soap free bar and then another bath with tea tree and aloe and it clears it right up.
