Transitioning kennel dog to indoors

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by smokefirst, Jan 2, 2015.

  1. How hard is it for a dog to learn to live indoors if its been kept outside its whole life?

How smart is the dog? lol

  3. Not sure, probably not very smart at all. He's a high energy dog. My main concern he will get into some $hit before he learns house manners. I just wanted to see how many people have done this and the outcome of it.

Most dogs can be taught......if the owner is patient and smart enough to teach them.

My mentor and I believe when raising multiples, that thats the only way...
We raise our pups outside for a multitude of reasons from the patientce it takes to train them to older dogs earned that spot...
For years the pups see the adults come out to empty and go back in, I noticed this practice alone can cut out potty training, monkey see-monkey do...
Older dogs have less teenage anks to screw things up, and most that deserve it dont take much to adapt, grass is greener on the otherside...
My mentor has thirty dogs tied out, and at any giving time you can take a majority into a house situation and they thrive...
Our family is abnoramally human affectionate compared to most and to have one that dont thrive in a house situation is rare...
I am sure most families and or yards would be the oppisite, I believe it depends on the individual as some are more set in thier ways...
My mentor also let cold dogs run loose as well as mutts and other breeds that find a place on the yard...
He has no problem taking a midage dog of the chain and giving them to a friend/family for a house dog as he knows they will live a better life...
Most of the time this works if the person has any dog sense, but sometimes it dont...
I have had more luck with house training older dogs than pups as I dont have the patientce and time and if the dog is well balanced, cant hurt to try it...

Dog hiking leg * moved thread

Not meaning to Hijack the thread but for some reason I can't post a new thread on my iPhone. Simply will not let me. So their seems to be some educated folks responding in this room and maybe you can help me out. I've had Bulldogs pretty much my entire life. But they have always been on the chain or in a kennel. The last 3yrs I started having to keep one of them indoors. It's a male around 2.5 yrs old. Recently he started hiking his freaking leg on my couch out of nowhere. I have a nice home and furniture and simply can not tolerate this but I can't boot him out the house either (Codes) and home owners association crap. So, what can I do to break this behavior? What is the cause of this behavior? It just started a few days ago. Only done it a few times in the same spot. I have no other animals indoors, all other dogs outside. I recently had a baby, he's 1yrs old now. Could that be the cause? The bulldog marking his territory and trying to establish himself higher in the "pack" over the child? This dogs has always been indoors. Since 8 weeks old. Could it be stress brought on by the child learning walking around and being mobile now? I've tried to clean up the scent of his urine and rearranged the furniture. Even shampooed the carpet in that room. And it's only happening in that room. My wife's gonna kill me and my high dollar bulldog if I don't figure this out soon, any help or advice or similar experiences would be grately appreciated by me and my wife lol. Sorry again for posting this here.

Re: How'd all these dog people get in my room?

I'm sure I'm not the guy to ask. As to your speculations, they sound reasonable to me and to be concerned about -- child and dog, dog vying for attention/(primacy?) My ear grows very alert over that one. Dire considerations put aside, there's of course the pissing in the house. If it were only that you have to be concerned about, I think your dog is in need of reminding as to his house training. In that regard, I used to house train a pup in a single day just by watching him/her constantly and landing hard (voice raised and showing displeasure) at the beginning of every "accident" -- then quickly taking the pup outside.

Yea, I just don't know. He's 2.5yrs old and It just started. I guess he just started hiking his leg about 6 or so months ago outside when walking him. Like I said, he's only done it 4-5 times in the house. I was hoping he just lost his mind for a brief moment lol. This particular dog shows no sign of human aggression and is actually very submissive to people. I will say he is a bulldog and don't care much for 4 legged creatures. And he's great with this child. That's why I picked him to be the one to come inside as a pup. I was just wondering yalls input and especially yours as you know a heck of a lot more than me. I guess I'm just gonna have to put him in his place so to speak within the pack. you know how these Bulldogs are, just stubborn as mules though. Once they get something in their head it's hard to break. Hopefully the things I did already will correct the issue. Getting him fixed is not a option and that's what some stuff I researched recommended. He's a high dollar dog and that just won't work. anyway, appreciate your thought on it. Didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Probably, depending on ordinances, HOA rules, ect.

Actually I can only have 1 dog outside and it has to be a privacy fenced in yard. But I bend the rules with two. And one in the house. My HOA isn't the worst in my area. As long as I don't go overboard I don't catch any crap. The dogs I have aren't barkers and don't bother anybody. Plus my yard has a privacy fence as they say in the rules , (not chain link) so you can't see anyway. But if somebody chose to be a butthole about it they could fine me. I'm not use to this. I'm from the country in the mountains. But I understand the reason for the HOA. It's meant to keep the area nice and not ran down. Like no junk cars, metal buildings and so forth.

I've lived in this house for a year or better. All my dogs are 2-6yrs old and hell will freeze over before I part with them. I got 3 pretty good dogs especially for the age of two of them. This is why I need a freaking kennel partner but not knowing anybody here makes that a difficult task. Plus I wouldn't just trust any old soul with my dogs. In sure yall understand that.

However I rotate the two outside dogs in and out of my garage. I just got to keep all 3 separated. But I'm not having to do that at the moment. One dog is in Chattanooga with my sister as "protection" as she attends college. But, he sucks at it. He's more or less a deterant. So basically I only got ne outside and one inside at this very moment so I'm not catching any crap. Plus I think they only think I go two dogs anyway. Two are black and look very similar. To these yuppies they have no clue what they are looking at anyway. My neighbor says, oh those are "Pitbull mixes". I said, why you say that? They said oh because they aren't real big and muscular like a Pitbull. They are kinda skinny and lean looking. Lol. I was like yup, your right. Lol

Yea man but I just bought this home. My kids are in school and daycare here, the wife, well...she was determined to get this house. It's a very nice home. I never thought I'd live in a home like this. Plus I dropped a hundred grand down on it as down payment so I got a lot tied into it. I already had equity based on the appraisal and what I paid. So I walked in the door with 60k equity. I'm not gonna live here forever. But for now I'm here and hope at some point I can get me a partner near me. I don't want a lot more dogs anyway. Maybe 3-5 more even with a partner. Just depends on my needs in my line really. But yea, 6-8 dogs on a chain behind a 350k home in the suburbs wouldn't fly.

haha you made the mistake letting her pick out the house . and yes you sure can have dogs be hide a house that cost 350k but you need the acreage 3-5 . maybe you can keep the house you 3-5 and make some money of it on a resale . good luck worth your journey .

Thanks Goat. Yea that's my plan for the future. "Hopefully". I only have a acre in a subdivision at the moment so your right, I don't have the space for any more than I already have. I haven't been to ADBA shows in years. I do want to attend some. I checked their website the other night after speaking on the phone with rage for about 2hrs. He suggested the same. Right now it seems they have events coming up, but location is undetermined. I would love for them to be fairly local. Atleast south east. Mo just can't travel to to go to a show at the moment. Hell I'm not opposed to being a co owner of a dog with someone who lives far away. That's why I'm just gonna give rage a pup. One I respect him and value his opinions. Two, I know the dogs going to good hands and I'm almost certain if I ever wanted to breed with the dog he would have no problems with me doing so. That's the kinda people I want in my circle but the bulldog world can be a shady place. Man if I just had the contacts, especially local, I feel I could really do something with these dogs. I'm trying my hardest because I got some pretty good dogs and I will die before I let them waste away. I had a vision when I got these Garner dogs, I'm not gonna let it die on my behalf or lack of resources.

In my expierences it's much easier than putting one raised indoors out on a chain...
