Traits of a potential hard mouther...

What are some signs you look for in a youngster when looking for a good mouth? I understand that there will be late bloomers and those pups that shake the hell out of every toy only to have the intensity lessen or plateau as they reach adult hood. However, what are some traits that you guys have noticed that a majority of the time will lead to a good mouth?

To me, its not about which pup bites the hardest, or shakes the hardest. Its how long they hang on for.

The ones that refuse to let go no matter what; picking them up off the ground, splashing them with water, blowing wind in their face, pinching them in between the toes, flicking their nose, pulling their tails... They are the ones in my experience that grow up to have a wicked mouth.

I don't think this is a sure fire way to pick em, I believe you can't really ever truly know til they mature. But if you want to make a hunch, or a guess based on superstition/experience, thats what I look for personally.

In my opinion, there is no sign that tells you how hard of mouth a dog has until he bites a hog. The hardest biter I've seen didn't play tug of war, didn't springpole, or bit on anything that wasn't a live hog. And SOB good break bones with his first hold without shaking. Also, many dogs do not bite their hardest all the time, so the only to know if you have a really hard biter is to let him bite a hog and see what damage was done afterward. JMO

ragging a toy won't tell you a damn thing other than the fact that he doesn't particularly like that doll. stuffed bears don't bite back and neither do spring poles.

speaking about all dogs when i say, the only way to know how your dog will perform is to get out there and hunt.
(I once had a guy tell me he thought his show line border terrier would be a great hunting dog because it shook the hell out of stuffed animals and brought in the occasional rat)

A dogwoman I know put it like this "I've met many men that act right and talk a big game while we were out. But when it actually time to perform, they were standing the count at 6 minutes"

My point is, there is no substitute to figuring out how "game" your animal is or how hard it can bite until you actually go hunt.

If your really looking for mouth in your dogs best guess is genetics most times not all but most times if a parent is known to be a hard mouth dog they throw hard mouth dogs but Wardogs and some of the rest are exactly right until you see them go you dont know and no matter how hard they bite a toy or how big their teeth are or any of that has anything to do with how hard they bite in the box.

lol the pinching between the toes thing is an old method of choosin a pup to see how he acts he bites your hand its not the one same as squeezing behind the hips turns to get your hand not the one ignores it thats good nails any other pups thats your boy lol!!!

using it as a way to "test" wheather you have a hard mouth dog is less than a joke in my opinion.
best way to tell is if its down from hard mouth dogs, and then work em.

with suggestions like that im suprised no one has said to just ask them!
