This is the deal, a while back the dogs were barking one night so I went outside with my flashlight to see, and there on the other side of my chainlink fence is a coyote sitting looking at my dog. I ran inside to get firepower and by the time i got back it was gone, like i assumed it would be.

Last week my brother and his roommate moved in next door. His roommate brings his 2 yr old black lab (I am not too thrilled but, thats a whole nother thread). The first night the lab is there he starts barking his head off at about 11 pm. So my brohers roommate goes see about him and when he gets to the kennel there are two coyotes sitting about 15 feet from the kennel. So he lets the lab out and it jumps straight into the back of the truck and the coyotes leave.

Last night I got home with a new bag of dogfood and two knuckle bones from the pet store. I fed the dogs around 6pm and gave them their bones, then I left the house for a couple of hours. When I got home around 8pm the first thing I did was to go and check on the dogs because I had given them the bones. I get my flashlight and went outside and from the house i can hear Samson chewing on his, and Dena was asleep ontop of her doghouse as usual. I decided to look around to see how much damage she has done to the bone and it is nowhere to found. I even went and looked this morning and cannot find anywhere that she might have hidden it or buried it. Yes she is on a chain and samson is in a kennel.

My question is has anyone had any runins with coyotes and would it be possible that they would come into her chainspace and steal a bone? Would they be that brave? Are there any natural deterents to keep coyotes away or is lead my only option??

Depending on how hungry they are, yes they can & WILL be that brave.

I am constantly dealing with yotes at my house. When I first moved there they would come up and fight with my dogs through the kennel. Shot a couple of them, but after that they now know not to come within range when all of my trucks are there or any lights are on, coyotes are extremely smart. They are very territorial and will gang up on a dog to kill it, especially a young dog, I have had several coonhounds cut up by coyotes while hunting. My advice to you would be to shoot everyone you ever see, but I hate coyotes with a passion. It sounds like they are just coming to your house for a free meal, so it might be pretty easy to trap them.

I'd seriously consider traps....they (the coyotes)can be very dangerous to your dogs.

  5. You have the right choice of dogs or? I f had had cojotes here I would simply let my dogs go If you have the right dogs they kill 1 or 2 cojotes. I dont think cojotes are able to kill a little game -dog pack or?

Why do that & take the chance of your dogs getting hurt? Coyotes are nasty & do not always travel alone. Rabies is a problem with them as well.

I don't know, coyotes run in packs too, don't they? I would be scared of disease being transferred

Do you live in town, or the country? Whats always worked for my partner is a yappy yard dog, who alerts to any problems. If your out in the sticks, let a bulldog off the chain to get to work!

Obviously, if you live in a populated area, thats not an option. However, since you were ready to go in the house, grab a gun, and pop off some rounds, I assume you don't have to worry about people calling in gun shots or barking dogs!

Sometimes you may only see one coyote, but they will "bait" a dog into getting it to chase it - right back into the middle of a whole pack. One coyote by itself won't mess with an adult dog, but when they get together in a pack, they get very brave. They are alot tougher than they look too. I have an older male black and tan that is great with other dogs, until they put their teeth on him. His is only about 50 pounds, but I have on several hunts seen larger dogs, 60-70 pounds, jump on him and try to run him off the tree, and as soon as they bite him you better get ready to pry him off their throat. The point is, I have seen this dog whip several dogs that were alot bigger than him, but as soon as he hears a pack of coyotes, which most around here don't get over 30-35 pounds, he will run and hide in his house, or if we are out hunting he'll go back to the truck and hide in the dog box. He has had many run-ins with them before, and knows they are nothing to mess with.

YEP they will. watch any young pups close. I'd bait them up and sit out with a q-beam with a red plastic lens on it and shoot them if you can get close 12 ga #4 3" mag buck shot is just the ticket. Yis J

I live in the country and behind my house we have about 40 acres of farmland, and woods to the left, that is where they are coming from. well I was considering turning him loose but I too am concerned about the 'pack' although we have only laid our eyes on two of them, i am sure that there are more out there. I really dont mind that they are on the property, because in recent years a lot of farmland and wooded areas around here have been cleared out to make way for failing subdivisons, and the coyotes have to live somewhere. I just dont want them this damn close.

A red lens is a definite must, if not they take off as soon as you turn the light on. I'd get some rotten meat and put it out about noon, then set up right before dark and wait!

Smart dog! We've had them kill a couple of my ex husband's coon dogs, they have killed cows, calves, chickens, you name it. And the female coyotes can be quite wiley themselves. They will bait a dog to come to it just to have the rest of the pack tear it up. I would never let a dog of mine loose on one of them. Diease ridden things they are. And a LOT Braver than they used to be too, anyone else notice this?

They are like rats if you see one thare is more. You should ask the farm owner if you can trap them If you would like you can pm me and I will let you know some tips. I wont post them for all to see (I get paid to trap them) but I will let you know how you can get them and its fairly easy.Im out off to the fishin hole. YIS J

  16. Run and hide in house LOL ....ok what kind of a dog is that? If my dogs would smell or hear some kind of that they would scream and run with theyr heads against the door until they die or I open it. If the coyotes would bite them in each case 3 legs off they would jump on one leg still trying to catch one. What you told is a strange behaviour for a game dog...

i had the same problem about 2 years ago. i have 2 chain spots that leave about a foot between the two dogs and one of the yotes decided to cut through there and got ate by two of my catahoulas. i came out to feed them the next day and they had him stretched in two. i threw him out in the woods and havent seen them since. i still hear them late at night, but they're a long way away.

Well here, we have had so much development I really believe they are being pushed into neighborhoods and the food resources are declining. The other day I was driving to work and I was on a road that is still poorly lit and undeveloped and there were two bucks, running on the side of the road, at first from a distance I thought they were dogs and as I got closer I thought ...Thats not something you see often....about a quarter mile after I passed them, I saw a bulldozer clearing some land so I guess they got flushed out.

I am here now. lol reading replies.

I don't know how effective a shot gun will ever be on a coyote. Not that the gun wont kill it. Drawing it in close enough with you there, human sent, and human movements is not something every one knows how to cover up or change to get such a short range shot. I use a 30.06 with a night vision scope. Daylight I am using a 45/70 as I hunt from a ground blind and bait with coon guts and fish guts mixed. washing cloths in baking soda and wearing a coal impregnated suit to cover human oder. Sound, light, smell, sight discipline must be obeyed. I wouldn't eat the nasty creatures though lol. I have dogs I run on them things. I can bring them down this up comming week if you wish and we can get rid of them ugly bastards. We can use a shot gun that way as they will be holding them down. I like to use a rifle and light and shot them in the head between the the glowing eyes. Let the dogs drag em around in glory. They will eventually sneak in and may kill your dogs one at a time. they are rotten like that.
A fun way to rid of a few is to set carcases, guts, food waste etc. in a three foot deep hole with a live wire run on insulators at the top end of it. once they get their head in there far enough they will touch it and you'll find them with their ass in the air dead. 110 is best as it isn't strong enough to knock it loose but is strong enough to hold them there have it on at least a 50 amp fuse. The dirt is the ground. you must watch the contraption and never leave any trap out where any one can get into it. remember there are people dumb enough to touch it. you'll know when it has been hit. your lights will dim. A few minutes and it is done deal
    silent, fast and effective
some use snares but the coyote gets wise to what ever you use in a short time. I use traps, bait, rifle and dogs and switch them up to keep the little bastards guessing. remember to put your traps up before using the dogs. They will go right to the trap sure enough. if you can take it fox urin is a good cover sent for you. I personally don't care. It doesn't bother me a bit. you get used to the stink. smell isn't any worse than the nursing homes I have visited.
Let me know what you want to do.
