Thoughts on my boy JOHN GOTTI?

 Okay...so I'm sure his name is getting some "head shakes" right now. :) Let me begin by saying that I did not name him...he already had his name when we got him from a "friend" who could no longer care for him at 4 months old. Said friend, it turns out, was a wannabe-street-thug-dog-fighter...he is also no longer a "friend". We have owned John for the past 6+ years.

For years, I have heard "are you sure he's full pit bull, he is sooooo small?!?!?!?!" Now, I have known for many years that pit bulls should NOT be large dogs. I have just within the past few years become serious about learning about the breed. So, at times, I would tell people "THAT (pointing at John) is what a pit bull should look like". Now, I realize he is definitely not a perfect specimen, but when compared to the 90 lb. slobberhounds I'd say my statement is accurate.

Anyway, in my ongoing effort to learn more about this wonderful breed, I have been doing a good bit of reading...both online and in print.

I am in the process of reading Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier, and I have noticed NUMEROUS dogs in the book who look nearly IDENTICAL to my boy John. IIRC, a few of the dogs are pictured on pages 76 and 102.

So...on that note: Do you have any thoughts on his structure / overall appearance?

    John's info:
    6+ year old male
    Unknown background
    Approx. 53 lbs.

He is a nice looking dog. Deffinatly not what I thought when I first saw the title. He could use some training to get some excess weight off but then again he is 6 years old so I'm not sure if that is something you would want to do. Either way if your happy then its all good.

LMAO...yeah...I figured the title would draw some attention

But yeah, he could DEFINITELY slim down a bit and that is my goal for this spring.

He is everything I could ever ask for in a dog, and he is THE REASON I love these dogs.

    Thanks for your input! :)

he looks good to me. and you are happy with him and after all- that is what its all about. sure he could lose a few pounds- but any dog over 5 kinda gets a pass in my book (i.e. a pound or 3 heavy is ok, not 15+ over)

lmao @ "sooooooo small." I hear that bull all the time. I once got it from someone bragging on their 90 mutt. When they say my 47 lb male, they said the same thing. They say the same thing about my 26 lb female. She was even accused of being a "mini pit!" rotflamo ...

JMHO I think he looks a bit like a AmStaff... Which isn't bad they can be very pretty dogs.... Yeah a few pounds he could loose to get in show shape but he's at a nice winter chain weight..

Some hand walking and a good feed program can do wonders, I'd love to see photos of him about 7 to 10 lbs lighter and cut. Black and white the pic and post it up, should look nice.

AmStaff is fine by me! I mean you get what you get when you take on an unknown dog, and I was lucky enough to get the best dog I have ever owned.

You could tell me he looked part GSD for all I care :) He is a great dog!

I do plan on getting both of my boys slimmed down in the coming months, but nothing dramatic.

I will DEFITNITELY post some "after" pics.

Thanks for all of your input, everyone!!!
