Besides the ability to produce what qualities and age will you decide on to use him as a stud?
Also if its his first time, why would you use him?

If it's his first time I use him because I've seen something in him that I like. Age wise, however long it takes for me to see qualities I'd like to reproduce.

Yeah if he's A working A job wait till he retires, there have been novels written on this subject! LOL For me to pick A stud, (generaly) game, HEALTH, and something that has A record of clicking. Like I said there have been serious debates on this. No bodys right and no body is wrong! YOU have to have esparanza (faith) in what your do'n!

Straight up, here's the deal my partners have a male that say is gonna be their stud. They say he is too valuable to touch and would rather deal with the offspring....caught me off guard...in the past they never thought this way!

    ...three ps...
    1... performance...
    2...Parents and pedigree...
    3... production...

The last is the most important for the next generation,,, the performance of the family tree assures longevity of the orchard...

The first time is up to the owner. You can't wait to see if he will produce until he produces.

If there is a lot of experience with a certain family and he does the things early on just like his father/mother/brother/sister/aunt/uncle/grandfather/grandmother then it is a safer bet to breed early.

If there are family unknowns it should be a little later down the road once he proves he is a worthy enough candidate to breed. Then him as a producer him can only be determined two/three/four years down the road.

An age old formula is to start out with females and go to someone else's stud/proven producer. You can buy a piece of their hard work for just a few dollars.

The only real truism is that one will never know until he breeds the dog. It is coulda/woulda/shoulda til it happens.

I guess I could understand it better if it were a female...in the past I've seen and sort of understood that....but not with the male..there have been dogs not even given the right to breed, and peds just as good...the sire is fairly old but the dam is in her prime(to the new stud). I guess he is going off the family tree....idk after asking so many times I just stop bothering him..

    Imho
The qualities depends on the bloodline...
Age, it really doesn't matter(cause a dog can either produce or not)... it's up to the one doing the breeding...

You have to breed them to be able to evaluate the offspring, to get a conclusion...

Question is, why do they think he is to valuable?

That's when I think about storing semen. That way if something does happen you still have a few Breedings you can try

If he is to valuable to touch, how do you know if you're storing cold/cur semen? But I guess cur and cold dogs produce too...

No you store it so you can look and see and still have a chance to breed if something happens and you loose him

I've never done it but that's always been my only reason I've ever been interested in storing semen

To the OP. Get a pup or 2 off the stud to be. I wouldn't "risk" a litter on a dog I haven't seen work. If it's his first time STUDDING I'd try if I seen him work. If he hasn't worked and the dam has, I'd try for some pups. If neither are workin dogs, pass on both. I wouldn't use my gyp tho

Now the sire to the "stud" was good in his time ....dam checked out, there were only 2 males I guess that was the reason.
I don't know about the semen stuff, they have never mention anything like that, old cats idk.
No c-note I have one if I was going to do that...hell I like him just as much as far as peds go.

Use your own then if he works. Gotta check production somehow. If he did all that you want see if his offspring will. Performance over peds! If he works good, has a good ped, AND he's yours?? Win, win win, win win

If there were two, that one ain't that valuable imho unless the other is dead(& was a great one), and I would still have to watch him play...

Even if I have a lot of confidence in A breeding I would never breed A male that had A job, the reason being it can burn there mind, I have seen it you take him off the chain, or A gyps in heat he thinks he's fix'n to cut some! No joke you ever seen A match where one is trying to hump the other? Never breed A male that's working! A gyp totally the opposite.

Ive heard of a dog that would get ahead of his adversary and hump them to death,,, a differnt type of freak there...
