this is funny, so judges or you can tell a good worker just because the dog meets or is close to a standard? a bulldog can look like a poodle if you ask me as long as it works real dog people could care less. beauty is and must be secondary, after all we are talking about a working breed arent we? what does work have to do with a standard but phisical and mental balance? the sbt standard calls for an unbalanced dog that is not worked in any venue. standard= brainwashing. plenty of non working breeds out there for you to choose from. real staffords have never done well in front of other dogs, including shows.

a standard is like telling you you cant drink light color beer cause is suppose to be certain dark color

But in general...tall dogs win over shot dogs of same weight,,, heavy set dogs in general are harder to work...the Staffordshire Bull Terrier standard was written by show fanciers...changed in the late 1940s by show fanciers

General appearance: He should be of great strength, muscular and agile (don’t forget that!) He should be a smooth coated dog.
Head and skull: Broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop.
Foreface not too short, should show a bit of the terrier.
    Black nose,
    eyes dark.
Mouth: The incisors of the bottom jaw should fit closely inside the incisors of the top jaw. Lips should be light, not like a spaniel.
Neck: muscular and as hard as rubber.
Legs: set rather wide apart, well-boned.
Body: well-sprung ribs and thin at the loins, no fat belly.
Hindquarters: should be well muscled, hocks let down with stifled well bent.
Legs: should be parallel when viewed from behind.
Tail: should be thin and of medium length.
Colour: brindle and white, red, fawn, white. Weight: dogs 28 to 38 lbs., bitches 24 to 34 lbs. Now the dogs in my day were from 36 to 40 lbs. Height: I like a dog 17 inces to 18 inches.

You ask me what i think of the present-day dogs and old-timers.Well, as regards the new standard,i am sure they are bringing them too low to the ground.Give me a Staffordshire about 17ins at the shoulder. He must be on the alert, strong, active,a very hard and strong muzzle with clean lips.He should have a good heart and plenty of guts, but you cannot find this out in the show ring.I can go as far as to say that eighty per centof Staffordshires today are cowards.
