A nice letter sometime ago from Mr. Jeff Kay of N.Y. in which he states some very good advice to all of the young men and some of the older ones would do wise to heed some of this word.

"There isn't much activity in the Northeast anymore but when I was a young chap 40 to 50 years ago, the sport was very much alive. At that time I was so situated I could not attend any of the conventions as I neither had the means or a motor car. Later on when they were held in the South I couldn't go also in 1951 I was all set to go to the spring convention when I was notified it was called off due to lack of matches. Here the young fellows aren't interested and most of the old timers have gone on to their reward.

Over two score years ago many saloon keepers had matches fought in their places and mostly for the benefit of their bar business. Once a sport starts to decline in any section it is hard to get it started again as many prominent people don't like to be associated with a losing cause. This sport has been run down by many of the people associated with it by doing actual damage to the sport will soon regain its popularity.

Years ago, in these parts, some would put various rubs and poisons in washes on their dogs and occasionally it resulted in fights amongst the spectators due to losses and some to drink. Once unfavorable reports start, many like to add to it's damaging effects, which is a hobby to them, argue at home and like to start a rumpus just to satisfy their pent up cussedness and emotions.

Nothing pleases a man more that to breed or won a winner, an honest victory being a real pleasure while a dishonest victory sometimes turns all honest sportsmen against them. Everyone interested in the sport should do what they can to boos the sport and if it is only a small effort if all do what they can it will be brought back to its popularity and proper place in the sports world of today.

Then again if one goes into the sport, they should never gamble more than they can afford to lose, causing them and their families to retrench in their budgets. It generally gets the family sore and they proceed to knock the sport and it has many damaging effects as once the newspapers get a hold of it and start a crusade it is a death blow to the sport in that vicinity and does harm for years to come. Boost your game as heartily as you feel it is justifiable and back your dogs to your financial capability no further. After all it is the sportsmanship we want to cultivate and not the size of our wallet.

It is funny how some solid advice from many years ago is just as solid today.

    Nice post.
