Stolen pit bulls returned to Arab’s animal shelter, situation takes an unexpected turn
Posted 7:08 pm, June 8, 2016, by Laura Christmas

ARAB, Ala. -- Two pit bulls stolen from Arab's animal shelter are back and Arab Police say the incident went from alarming to something much different.

Tuesday the Arab Police Department was working to find out who took two pit bulls from its animal shelter. Video footage shows the dogs were loaded into a truck, and that caused the officers to be alarmed. "Our first concern was two pit bulls, we were afraid that they were going to be used in some type of animal fighting or something of that nature," Assistant Chief Shane Washburn says.

It turns out, there were four teens involved, and the situation took an unexpected turn. "We talked to them and they had gone there that afternoon to adopt a pet, and the animal shelter was closed," Washburn explained.

Washburn says the teens were afraid the dogs they wanted would be put down, not knowing the shelter typically does that in emergency situations only.

So police say the teens broke into the outside pens and took the dogs. "They were actually going to take them home legitimately and use them as pets," Washburn said. The teens had even bought supplies for the dogs.

There is a $25 fee to adopt dogs from Arab's animal shelter, and that helps run the entity.

The teens will have an opportunity to do community service for the shelter. "We want them to learn from this experience," Washburn says.

Washburn says they're glad to know the teens were trying to do a good deed by adopting -- "But unfortunately they went about it the wrong way."

The shelter will allow the teens to adopt the dogs if they want to.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office and Guntersville Police helped identify the teens.

I think they should have been charged. These days ppl are goin to jail for talkin on the phone and havin paraphanalia like treadmills, other equipment, and meds. These kids broke in and stole dogs. The place was closed. It makes it ok just cuz the kids "said" they were gonna be pets? That excuses breaking and entering?

Why charge, so the can have a felony on their records. Which will hurt them for the rest of their lives.

I think the irony of this is they broke in and stole the dogs and received no charges, while you might find yourself with charges just for keeping a yard of dogs you bought or bred.

Exactly. Actual crime vs perceived crime. They got caught redhanded and got NOTHING. Guys talk on the phone and get conspiracy. Fair, hhhhmmmmmm????

To be honest, I doubt it's their first time doin somethin like this! Who thinks to steal a dog when you can adopt one the next day, legally???

Get them on paper now so when they commit a worse crime later they don't get first time offender leniency. Just because they wanted a pet don't excuse B&E. What kind of message does that send to the community? Even if your intentions are good, breaking the law is breaking the law period. I understand the point made about why give them a felony that will mess up their life later on however if you do the crime you do the time. They fully knew they were breaking the law and did it anyway.

Lol, having a shelter teach you how to care for dogs and giving you the dogs you were stealing to begin with don't sound like punishment. Sounds more like enabling to me, almost rewarding them for wrong doing. Why stop at the shelter, move up to knocking off stores then graduate to banks. Lol. Where does one draw the line on stealing?.

Use them legitimately? Sorry officer, You caught me breaking into a shop, I was going to use take the money home and use it legitimately. Honest, I came round earlier in the day and it was closed so I thought I would help myself before all the money was gone.

If the dog shelter was shut, then why did they jump to the conclusion the dogs would be put down the next day? If it smells like Bull, it proabably is.

"The teens will have an opportunity to do community service for the shelter. "We want them to learn from this experience," Washburn says."

Yeah, just what happens when you steal something, they invite you back to work there lol.

Washburn says they're glad to know the teens were trying to do a good deed by adopting -- "But unfortunately they went about it the wrong way."

They didn't try to adopt anything, "stealing" is the word. Probably saw the dogs online, picked the ones they wanted and broke in when the shelter had closed. Pretty sure they would know the opening times if they didn't want the one's they liked to be put down.

Sounds like some Peta type teenagers liberating dogs because they read that shelters put them all to sleep.

Good publicity for Arab shelter and their cheap $25 dogs. Probably made it all up for publicity lol.
