Those collars are designed for working dogs in the middle east, dogs that live with sheep and other livestock and are constantly battling wolves, coyotes, and anything else that might injure his stock. A collar like that is useful to a dog trying to fend of 5-6 coyotes by itself.

I found the following paragraph to be interesting:

"Stories of tradition in Turkey suggest that the spiked collars were placed on flock protection dogs after they had proven themselves worthy by killing a wolf. However, this is not necessarily accurate. Good protection dogs often prove their value more subtly; since presence of predators in an area, coupled with the conspicuous absence of predator losses is proof enough to the experienced shepherd that the expected work of the guardian dog is being done. Perhaps collars were specially made and placed on particularly favorite dogs, thus supporting the stories of legendary dogs earning these collars, but the presence of the collar doesn't necessarily mean that the particular dog has dispatched a wolf. From another view point, the collar on the dog could very well be a contributing factor to the fact that predator losses have not occurred since even a brief fang-to-fang skirmish could have otherwise resulted in serious injury to the unprotected dog, opening the potential for real trouble for the flock."

"Ouch" is right! The way they hung them on the wall on the sales page link is cool. Four collars, and a picture of a dog wearing one. Very gothic. Me likey.

WOW! Love the part about the history behind those huge things. Wouldn't want to be the wolf who tried to bit onto one of those dogs necks! Thanks for the post, very, very interesting....

I really wonder how long it is before these start showing up on dogs in the US? A collar like that fits the bill perfectly for a small-dicked man, looking to make himself seem tough with his 120 lb. blue cropped eared "pit" and massive spikes. :(

Well, I'm sure some will try it, but it won't be long before they hock that idea because they will end up stabbed by their dogs.
And think... what a nasty infection!

LMAO!!! Oh boy, I can't wait to point and laugh at THAT guy!

  15. We had a spike collar for my female, little spikes, dull ones, and we caught her using it when she was playing with other dogs, she'd push it into them while she was going for their cheeks, so those things up there would definitely be good for defense, but probably offensive too.

LOL. Not exactly my thought but very very close. That is very funny. I think I just woke up all my dogs laughing about that. I pray that these horrible things don't show up here in the USA. I liked those vest as on the hog hunters threads. That seems most logical in these times. That was funny. [IMG]

VERY good quality at a perfect price. (i get 5$ off for this plug right?)
