What about breeding good dogs. This is not writen to encourage dogfighting it is a peice I wrote back in the early eighties and is a historical writing. I've bred some good dogs in the past and have studied genetics for many hours. I've come to the conclusion that The best dog breeders have two strains or bloodlines of dogs that cross well together. Racehorse people call it a nitch. I call it a click. I tell everyone the trick is in the click. I had a neighbor who was a veterinarian and a racehorse man. He came to me and we talked about how I bred good dogs years ago. He was new at horse breeding and he followed some of my advise and became very good at breeding good race horses. He won lots of races at remington park here in Oklahoma. You see much different breeding programs today than in my era. Very litttle close inbreeding took place in my era like it does today. yet a few did practice it some. Old timers didn't do as much close inbreeding in the old days but hundreds do this practice today. I believe no one bloodline has a monopoly on good dogs. Good dogs can crop up out of not so popular bloodlines of bred dogs also. My alvin dog had one quarter amstaff blood the other three fourths was pretty good stuff. Alvin produced lots of winners that whipped lots of popular bloodlines of his era. Most of his but not all of his pups were game. Probably around a ninety percent showing of gameness which is unheard of today. Gamesness comes in percentages that is the way I calculate a dogs fighting ability and gameness. Some dogs can win 50 percent of the fight and never quit but if they fall behind and only get 30% they quit. Yet some bloodlines have to win 90% percent of the fight to stay to the end. A true gamedog can get a butt whipping the whole fight and be down, whipped and can barely walk. When taken to the corner he will still scratch if he can walk or crawl. A true gamedog will not always bring home the money. A rough curr pitdog will win just as often and no one will ever get to see him quit because he will stay forever as long as he is on top and he will never let hisself be on bottom. Yet occasionally a rough gamedog is born and no one can stay with him or her. In my opinion 99.9% of all pitbulls today are currdogs yet some are truely game. The sad part about the clicking of a pair of dogs is usually when a man finds a pair of dogs that cross good together. He has sold one or one has died and he never gets to repeat his success again. The time span between the pups being born and maturing to a full grown battle dog is what causes the mistake to be made. Some people today acquire broodstock out of bloodlines that have lots of winners on the pedigree and never test the brood dogs. Yet some end up in good pitdog mens hands and show success. Yet the better practice is to breed game male to game bitch and hope for roughness or cross a game bloodline with a rough bloodline and hope for a game rough dog. Yet all dogs in any breeding program by theory should be tested. This was done when it was legal to fight dogs on a regular basis. Don't let this encourage you to fight dogs. You will end up in prison if you get caught.

I'm surprised so little new information and lack of.
Cunningham was the breeder of Shorty & Gimp. But also he owned their brother Cunningham's Boxer aka The Box Dog.
I have the picture of him which was later put on private post cards.

BTW 1 dog doesn't make a dogman, it takes a family of dogs...

Did anyone else catch the good read in the Gazette about these ol timers? Real interesting. Did not know that Corvino's Gimp was previously Cunninghams's Boxer.
I did not realise Bruces Jerry was a B&T dog with white blaze either.
