socializing you pup and dealing with strays

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by bajoquinto1, Sep 19, 2014.

  1. Since I picked up my 8 month old pup 6 months ago, I have been spending a lot of time bonding/socializing him by taking him out to different sorroundings and introducing him to different people and places. Recently i have came across a few stray dogs and luckily no incidents until earlier this week. I was walking my dog minding my own business when out of nowhere this little pomeranian type dog comes running at my dog barking, my dog gets very excited and starts lunging at the dog but in a playful matter the dog ends up biting my dog in the tail ( don't think my dog even felt it) my dog doesnt retaliate and anyways I pickup my dog and walk over to the owner yell at her ass and walk away. Luckily for me this was a small dog, but I was confused I didn't know what to do or how to react. So my question is how do you deal with stray dogs. My dog is still immature mentally so he likely would not be able to defend himself against a bigger dog like a rottweiler or another pitbull.

please invest in a break stick if you don't already have one. My take is that the dog shouldn't have to defend itself, it's your responsibility to keep him out of harms way. Obviously in situations like this you're forced to be reactive, I would do as you did and just pick the dog up. Sometimes even a little smack on the head with the break stick is enough to scare away the stray. A lot of dogs that have had an owner at some point will hopefully know the word "sit" I usually try that route when I see an approaching dog. But, i try not to give it the opportunity to approach my dog period. Luckily it isn't something I encounter a lot, i try to go to places where signs are posted about leashing pets and most are respectful of that.

What I try to do is walk my dogs at a time when im least likely to encounter other peoples dogs...although I still ran into a similar situation a couple years ago...a dog off the leash approached my dog and before I knew it she had the other dog screaming trying to get away when she clamped on to it lol...later that day I had animal control at my house because the owner of the unleashed german shepard dog was mad my dog had hurt her poor baby but when I explained the situation to them they knew I wasnt at fault and warned the owner to have their dog on a leash because it was the law...they claimed they didnt know that...some people lol

If i am walking a mutt and a stray dog runs up to us I will always pick my dog up, unless its a breed that is 70lbs or more. In that case, i am not getting involved. We have leash laws here and even so I try to stay away from other dogs at all costs but eventually it inevitablly happens. I'll put the boots to someones dog while holding mine up, had to do it on more than one occassion ( dogs under 70lbs). I refuse to get bit by someone elses larger dog so they just going to have to find out the hard way about whats at the end of my leash. Walking at night seems to limit this scenerio from happening as much.

Lol AGK people will never understand to leash and be responsible for thier own dogs and nothing surprises me lol..They always say he won't bite but they don't seem to realize the other dog just might.Rare incident for me but the guy down the road paw n law came to visit and he has a lil Shizu or how ever u spell it and I was in the yard and heard my dogs raising hell..I look up and this lil shit is headed straight for Clyde and my heart skipped a beat lol..I called the lil dog and to my amazement he came straight to me so no harm done..Clyde has caught a few rabbits that tried to run across his spot so I'm pretty sure that's about what he thought this little dog was.

Lmao, they almost always run out screaming they dont bite, I always tell them I think mine does. I must look ridiculous holding a 45 lb going ape shit dog up in the air while yelling and stomping to deter the lil ones from advancing on us. I always give it to the owners about the leash laws. Too many people got dogs around here who shouldnt own gerbils let alone larger animals..

Let me say I am a dog lover and dont like to see any cur dog having a bulldog on them...ive picked up my big 70 pound boy off the ground many a time when a little dog came running up not wanting to see the other dog get hurt but when it happened with my little 40 pound female I didnt even see the loose dog running up it caught me by suprise...we dont need any other bad publicity for our beloved breed

I always holler at the stray dogs, it scares them away almost everytime. I've had to put a boot on one within the last year but usually they run away faster than they run up to you.

The main problem is that the so called "LEASH LAW" is bullshit hence why A LOT of people DO NOT follow that leash law and let there dogs loose (off leash) in a public area.

For example if you own a pitbull and its on a leash and a small toy breed dog just happens to be off leash and your both in a public area and your pitbull kills that toy breed dog regardless if that toy breed dog was off the leash you can still be held liable and responsible for your dogs actions even if you didnt violate the leash law and the other owner did.

Every state and even cities have different leash law rules (go figure lol). If the leash laws were stricter to the point that any dog off leash in a public area will be TOTALLY at fault no matter what the circumstances then more people would abide by the leash law but that is not the case as stated in the example above.

Leash laws were made to provide equal protection for both parties but they do NOT provide (equal) protection when it comes to the circumstances of one party violating the leash law in a public area. You see its like a catch 22 circumstance where regardless if the other dog didnt obey the leash law they could turn it around and blame (put the fault on) you for you KNOWINGLY having a Dangerous/Aggressive dog out in a public area hence why you could also be held LIABLE and responsible even if you did NOT violate the leash law.

Im sure if they made the leash law to the point where any dog off the leash is at total fault, a lot of people would go out on a culling spree around the neighbor hood culling every dog off the leash, now that will teach all the irresponsible owners to leash up there fucking dogs and obey the leash law LMAOROTF.

Leashes are a form of control but the control comes from the person wielding the leash, the more leash handling experience a person has the better he can control his dog along with good judgement and common sense there can be very very little to no accidents at all compared to dogs not on a leash.

A leash might not stop a dog from biting or mauling something BUT it can be used as a preventative so that the chances of the dog biting something is very slim to none because you can control the range of contact. Its like saying a cage wont stop a tiger from biting or mauling something if that something happens to come into contact range LOL.

Like I said not all states have the same leash law rules and most of there leash law rules are very weak hence why I called it bullshit rules, I think only 2 states have strict leash law rules and even at that they probably have some loop holes to them rules.

A break stick as a prevention?????? LMAO....A break stick is only used once the incident has already happened its NOT a preventative LOL. Its like saying I have a medical kit to prevent someone from getting mauled LMAOROTF

A muzzle would not fix that issue if there are no strong leash laws. With a good solid leash law everyone must have there dog on a leash in a public area which protects both parties....BUT a muzzle is only meant for dogs that are KNOWINGLY aggressive so only certain dogs will have to wear a muzzle and how does one really determine if there dog is aggressive enough to wear a muzzle? And if only one party wears a muzzle, that would leave the muzzled dog unable to defend himself if a dog from another party without a muzzle attacks the both of you.

The only way to make the muzzle law fair is if EVERY dog wears one regardless of the dogs demeanor. Plus a muzzle can be detrimental to a dogs health especially more towards dogs that cannot breath that well to begin with like a english bulldog or a french bulldog or any brachycephalic type dogs.

A dog cools himself off by panting, with a muzzle on he can hardly pant which could lead to heat stroke and death.

P.S. A muzzle prevents a dog from eating all that garbage huh? LMAOROTF
