I personally prefer good old fashion roadwork. A mill can come in handy on them rainy days but nothing can beat roadwork. A good dog, conditioning harness (with tracer), and time that’s all I’ve ever used. I would use a slat mill if I lived in the city though. But then again they sound like a damn freight train when a dog is working them.

Me, I personally prefer slatmill. We here in the Philippines experience a great number of typhoons and we cannot do roadworks as often as we want. And a good slatmill will do come handy in conditioning a dog for a show. And for the strenght training we can always do the good old style of weight pulling.

  7. I Prefer to work my dogs by hooking up my leash to my WP harness & have them pull me on a skateboard for a mile or two. Uphill as much as possible & I also run em alongside me on the bike up to 3 to 5 miles. Another thing I just started is Running them on the bike with WP Harness on & drag a Car tire behind them & gradually build up the weight. Ive never tried em on a mill before. its alot more work when u actually gotta exercise with your Dogs & I got 3 that I work everyday pretty much.

I like roadwork myself. I get my dog worked along with myself.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

Nothing beats spending time with your best bud..and thats what road work brings to the table

But man...when you're short on time nothing beats a slat mill if you can handle the noise. I know people that put their carpet mills right next to the computer ..killing 2 birds with one stone.

I think a combination of millwork and road work works well. I know in some areas you need to be carefull about the type of equipment you own ..but sometimes doing road work can be just as dangerous especially if you live in an area in where people just dont understand the concept of keeping their dogs secure on their own property.
also..sometimes you get those do gooders who call you in for taking your dog along the car ..

If I had the space I'd put one of those jenny or cat mills up..

I think they both have there uses, I myself am in pretty good shape and I can work the dogs good doing roadwork. If I couldnt do roadwork I would us a slat mill.

Slat all the way. A carpet mill will over time put alot of strain on the dog's rear end.

I have 2 dogs get at least 3-4 miles each day followed by no more than 5 minutes on the slat.Once in the morning and once in evening.

Also work my bitches on the road, followed by swimming in open sea mostly behind boat in good weather. They're in the water for about 4-5 minutes then into boat for rest.Going back across bay they get same 4-5 again.

There is a slight difference in the bitches that get the swimming compared to the dogs getting the millwork. They seem to have more wind and are defenitely fitter and easier to condition.

I would have to say slat mill. From there you can go on as to how free spinning of a mill you want the more free spinning the better it does for giving the dog more air but if you get one that is not you can give air and build a little muscle at the same time. Also these days you can get mills that you can hardly hear when the dog is running it which is good for those who live in town and can't take their dogs out for road work all the time for whatever reason.

have you guys forgotten our four fathers way of conditioning.....CAT MILL....it was used by the most famous DOGMEN in the country....example D M ......... Yes road work is good....but your dog wants to go....go he shall and he'll be tring to pull you the whole way....the cat mill works the best.... the dog is non-stop running.....you have to build your dog up but at the end of the "keep" he'll be going 6 hours....BUT the reason that the slat mill started being used was for a couple of reasons...1..."dogmen" got lazy and wanted to be on the couch, or like whats his name said on the computer...2 a dog didnt like working by himself and wouldn't work the cat mill...so a person would get 2 slat mills and have them face each other that way they would work and you kill 2 birds with one stone....3 and cause conditioning a dog in the city, on a cat mill was out of the question...so really the slat mill was made for HUMAN conveinence....so IF you have the time and patience try the cat mill and you will be stumped that you haven't done it before..

“you have to build your dog up but at the end of the "keep" he'll be going 6 hours”

If you are working your dog for six hours straight you will be leaving the dog on the jenny instead of taking him to the show, or he is not working all that hard.

i dont get what ur saying?.........

What I’m saying is; you are either working your dog entirely too much (6 hour straight) and odds are your dog will not be at the show game day or you are working it half ass for 6 hour which makes no sense either way. Why would you need to work your dog that long? If you look (don’t have the energy) in the Journal, 99% (educated guess) of shows end in 2 hours or less. So what is the need for so much more work, which could equate to a minimal of an extra 12 hours of, unneeded work a week (60 the entire keep) on your athlete? That’s a lot of extra stress and time taken from him that could have been best used resting. IMO

well if your get the tapes from DON M. you could see how to SUCCESSFULLY do this to your dog...you work him up to 6 hours on the mill ....AND YES it is important to work your dog that much if you wanna win....4 days before the contest you let him rest and only road work for a little bit leading up to the show......by the time your dog is in the ring HE HAS NO FAT on him AT ALL and your dog is ready for the show....whether it last 30 min or 4 hours he is ready...
thats what seperates the winners from the losers...i dont see how people work their dogs for only and 1hour or 2 a day and expect him not to get tired at the 1 hour mark.....more than 50% of this game is conditioning i would say 25% on the stradegy you use in the ring and 25% for the dog.....

“well if your get the tapes from DON M.”
LOL. That’s all that I need to say!

“you could see how to SUCCESSFULLY do this to your dog”
Why would I won’t to add that much of unneeded time to my dogs workout, when what I am doing is working just fine?

“AND YES it is important to work your dog that much if you wanna win.”
This is really diverting Who, but I’m getting the feeling this is just like your breeding advise except know we are talking about conditioning. Have you ever put one through a keep?

“by the time your dog is in the ring HE HAS NO FAT on him AT ALL and your dog is ready for the show”
    I would hope not.

“thats what seperates the winners from the losers”
If that speaking from you own experiences or what others have told you?

“i dont see how people work their dogs for only and 1hour or 2 a day and expect him not to get tired at the 1 hour mark”
That’s because you have never conditioned a dog.

“more than 50% of this game is conditioning i would say 25% on the stradegy you use in the ring and 25% for the dog”
Could you please explain your “strategy” in the ring? If what you say is right, than that should mean you could bring in a mutt and win 3 out of 4. Since according to you 75% of the show is conditioning and strategy. I don't agree with your percentages, but yes a big part of winning is in conditioning.

YES Texas i have conditioned for a show before so dont be saying i haven't....i conditioned my male ALONG to same lines that i have said before...but like i told you in the chat that one time...he has no wind.....i conditioned him to the BEST of HIS abilities and he still came out with the win but by a narrow margin i went by my dad's conditioning and he said "NO DOGMEN COULD PUT MORE WIND INTO HIM....HE JUST DONT HAVE IT".....and thats from a CROSSED up family....

BUT back to the topic.....the "JENNY" when USED RIGHT.....will get your dog the best results....
