The city of Mobile has a policy of not adopting out Pits. They simply euthanize all that are unclaimed at animal control because pits are too big of a risk to adopt out. The petition is to the city to allow adoption of these animals. Apparently, the policy to euthanize was enacted by the director of the animal shelter, and not a city statute.

OR WILL HE LET SPENCER DIE? LIVE! TONITE JUNE 15th - 8 PM EDST - TELL MAYOR JONES WHAT YOU THINK!

Welcome to the first Dog Politics Skypecast! Tonite we'll talk about saving a life that hangs in the balance - is there any hope? Spencer is an innocent pitbull sentenced to die for being the "wrong" breed. Spencer's potential adopter lost her bid to save him - but is there still time? An appeal to save Spencer has gone out to Mobile's newly elected Mayor Sam Jones - himself a pitbull owner - as well as to change the city's policy of euthanizing pitbulls for being the "wrong breed".

I just got a call from Amanda, it seems the Mayor of Mobile Sam Jones Just had a press conferance about Spencer. I don't know all the details but it appears that they are going to send Spenser to a rescue group in Utah to live out his days in comfort. [IMG] I heard this morning that He had to change His phone # and E-mail address due to all the calls from around the world. Thank You! As soon as I have more I will pass it it on! Tommy

Cool. You know this sort of thing is important for the long run as well. Anyone trys to introduce BSL in Birmingham and the memory of what a fuss this caused will be remembered. I think the perception that Pitbull owners are a "easy mark" for someone who wants to score some cheap political points is starting to change. And that, IMO will do more than any one thing to stop BSL.
