Ruined??

    ABK Rest In Peace

Well, I came out to a wonderful sight this morning. One of my best prospects was off her chain & her face chewed to heck & back. Turns out her runner snap came loose from the over head runner & she got out a hole in her kennel.

She then got into a fence fight w/ the bulldog kenneled next to her & once that fight broke out my 2 yard dogs jumped on her. I found her walking around placidly in the yard this morning w/ the Dobermans, her muzzle swelled up like a basketball. And this is a dog who is usually trying to eat up anything w/ fur.

Physically, she should be fine, but I am worried about her mind. She was just walking around loose in the yard mild as a kitten, not challenging anything. And normally this dog is one that tried to hit anything. Please excuse my ignorance, but I am wondering - did too much of an overwhelming opposition (3 on 1) break her spirit? Or is she just feeling bad from the chewing she took? If she is ruined, is there any way of salvaging her or is she a cur beyond hope? I do not know how long the fight went on, as it happened at over night.

As a side note, my dogs are on overhead runners, inside kennels, that are inside a chain link fence that is inside a privacy fence. The snap on her runner is in perfect working condition, she just happened to hit it in such a way so it came open enough to let her cable off the over head.

And we had repaired the hole in her kennel previously. It was a small hole & we didn't think she could get through it, but she is a small dog, so we repaired it anyway & hooked a dog feeder in front of it to keep her from messing w/ it.

I found the snap slightly open, the feeder hanging askew from where she pushed it aside, the repair busted out & her cable to collar cable was still on her collar.

  2. Aww, I am really sorry to hear that, I sure hope she is OK though, poor little thing.

Always seems like the damndest things happen when you least expect it.
I will be praying for her a full mental and physical recovery.....

Thank you so much. Physically she should be fine. I am praying she is not mentally ruined.

Luckily, all my bulldogs are kenneled. If they were on chains alone that other bulldog would have killed her.

This is what I would do, bring her in the house if you can and spend some good time with her while she's healing and get her feeling better then in a few days try her out and see what happens. if she doesn't fire up then you know what you have, but maybe time will fix that, every dog is diff. Yeah, I have already brought her inside. She is in the dining room resting quietly. Her whole countenance seems subdued right now. But she is probably quite sore.

I would be more inclined to think that she's in a mild state of shock. (medically, not mentally)

Thanks Mia. She looked kind of dazed & aimless in the yard, but she recognized me as soon as I came out & ambled toward me w/ a wagging tail.

She walked sedately wherever I wanted her to go (normally she is at the end of her leash like a maniac) & went willingly in the house. I gave her a bath. She did not like this & she tried a couple times to climb out of the tub. I checked her gums & her color is good.

I just checked on her & she again recognized & greeted me. She is drank a several sips of water for me & shows interest in food, but is not eating, which I can understand since her lips are pretty well chewed.

    sorry to hear that, abk.

hopefully she's fine, and will be just as determined when she's fully healed.

I'm glad y'all posted b/c I thought she was walking so slowly & was acting so meek b/c she was just stove up.

I checked her gums when I was bathing her & her color was good. She is drinking water, but not eating, which I can understand. I've currently got her in a crate b/c right now b/c she is trying to rub her muzzle on everything.

I'm sorry to hear it :( The sounds of her injuries, will be repairable. I understand the worry of her being ruined mentally. How old was she, and has she ever been into it with another dog (let alone 3)?

First, sorry to hear what happened ABK.

I've heard of the 'breaking spirit' thing happening with young bulldogs that get attacked or jumped and then never turn on. I'm sure it could happen with an older female but much less of a chance.

Like the others said it sounds more like she was in shock and probably didn't feel like engaging in another confortation (sp?), plus knowing the dobies would outnumber her.

Just give her some TLC and I'm sure in a week or so she'll fire right back up (maybe even better!)

Thank y'all for your kind words.

Rock - I'm sure she will heal up. It's just her mind I am worried about. She was showing great promise & to see her out there walking around like a meek little kitten among those other dogs, well ...

She is 13 mos old. She has tied up w/ other dogs (accidentally of course) but they were her size, nothing big & certainly nothing like what she went through last night. Poor baby.

Lethal - I hope what you say is true. Who knows how long she was out there though & who knows who did what. She obviously got the worse of it, I know that. I guess time will tell.

Of course no one can say for sure, but I agree that her body is just probably at hault. I don't think her spirit would be broken, but I don't know. My guess is that she just kept going and is physically/mentally exhausted. It sucks getting your butt kicked, I'm sure she's just recooperating. I wouldn't worry too much. [IMG]

I don't really know what to tell u, its anyones guess if she's ruined or not it all depends on the individual dog, i say get her all fixed up physically and then only time will tell if she's gonna get back to her old self. Good luck
