Let me start off by saying that some of you guys/gals are AWESOME and so well read and experienced in this breed. It's nice to see that these days when most people don't know jack squat about real APBTs. I can only hope that I can one day be so knowledgeable.

I'm not really new to owning this breed, but I am new to all other aspects (showing/weight pull/bloodlines). My family has adopted a few "purebred" rescue pits over the span of about 10 years, and now that I'm on my own and a little more mature I am trying to educate myself as much as possible about this WONDERFUL breed so that I can actually put them to good use (besides being my best friends). I have two dogs right now that have made me fall madly in love with APBTs, and now I know I will never love another breed the same! Aaron is a stray we (my BF and I) found wandering the streets near our old residence, and Major is a four-month-old pup that my BF bought (probably from a BYB, sadly-he is quite ignorant in that respect) in January. His (Major's) parents and litter are registered with the ADBA (my first papered dog EVER), but we just got the RC and haven't had a chance to send it in, so a pedigree is a ways off. I have NO idea what type of bloodlines he's come from, and I'm rather anxious to find out. I'm sure it's nothing, but he can't read his pedigree, right? I'm looking into having him do weight pulls when he gets a little older.

Anyway, I am hoping to find out about some of the old school bloodlines, some of the more "pure" lines, and some proven weight pull or maybe even hog dogging lines (if such things exist). A few of the names I've heard tossed around are Eli, Carver, Colby, Hemphill, etc. I, of course, know nothing about these bloodlines though. Are there any reading materials anyone can recommend regarding these subjects (print or otherwise)? Also, I'd be interested in anything regarding weight pull training or showing and history of the breed.

I'd also like your opinions regarding how important having the correct color listed on an ADBA Registration Certificate is. Major's breeder listed him as being black and white and he is clearly seal. The ADBA said I need a statement from the breeder and it would be a hassle to have to deal with the breeder again (not very reliable), so I'd rather avoid the whole thing if possible.

Thanks for your time and patience, I know this one was LONG!!!

Welcome, you have come to the right place to learn. Just be a "fly on the wall" whenever bloodlines are being discussed, and if your confused dont be afraid to chime in during the thread, or pm a member to ask for help.

As far as which line is good weightpullers, nearly any gamebred dog will make a good weightpuller. Willingness to please, drive, strength, and structural integrity are all things that should be possessed by a well bred game dog.

For the color of your dog-just dont worry about it.

It is very hard to learn about the traits that a certain bloodline carries without

REAL LIFE observations. Reading about them or learning from these "experts" will

only help a little. Most people are so Kennel/Bloodline blind you cant get an

honest opinion anyway. For a start get the APBT Gazette and call almost all the

breeders you can and ask them what to expect from their dogs. If the dog is

scatterbred, ask WHY and what for. Research pedigrees non-stop and find

common ancestors you like and research their pedigrees. It will take years to

obtain the offhand knowledge required to REALLY disect a pedigree. Most

game bred lines now days are from a very small original gene pool( Dibo for

example) so in a way most are related. Its just depends on what way the

breeder went with his dogs. Thats why Tudor, Heinzl, Carver etc.... were

famous. They went the RIGHT way.

juicycal, like you I have owned this breed for yrs. But the long and short of it is that I too don't know much abut the breed, either. there is a search option on this website that has yielded huge and wonderful amounts of info for me, perhaps you could check it out.

I wouldn't worry about color either. My pup Tater was listed as red with brown tones/black mask/white marks. She has changed so much since she was registered that the only right description is black mask/white marks. I don't even really know what color she is. At one time I thought "dirty" buckskin, but she gets redder by the day, lol.
