Rescued dogs to be looked after by Humane Society

Following the arrests of Sadel and Terry Jackson earlier this week on charges related to animal cruelty and dog fighting, seven pit bulls were rescued from their property on East Griffin Avenue.

Decatur County Sheriff’s Officer Jason Williams led the investigation after a witness provided DCSO with video of alleged dog fighting occurring at the residence at 822 E. Griffin Ave.

The seven pit bulls, which were in varying states of health, were transported to the Bainbridge/Decatur County Humane Society. One of the seven dogs has since been reclaimed, because although he was at the Jackson’s residence they did not own him.

The six remaining dogs will be evaluated for temperament and checked for medical needs according to Ashley White, a representative of the Humane Society.

Staff at the humane society will work to determine if the dogs have any aggressive tendencies, to see if they are skittish and determine additional temperament problems the dogs may have. Before these evaluations are made, the dogs will be given a chance to adjust to their new surroundings White said.

White called on the community to help combat dog fighting throughout Decatur County so that more dogs don’t end up in a similar situation.

“There is so much more dog fighting happening in Decatur County than people realize,” she said. “If [residents] hear anything the best thing they can do is call local law enforcement.”

She also applauded Investigator Williams for working to make arrests in this case and rescue the dogs.
