Redboy Story...

Red Boy was the result of a father/daughter breeding of Teal's Jeff and Mc Leod's Susie Q Gal. Teal's Jeff was off of Teal's Sarge bred to Teal's Lou. Teal's Sarge was a pure Colby dog out of Colby's Dime bred to Colby's Margie. This combination of Red Boy/Cleo had produced top quality proven brood females, who in turn were bred back to Red Boy or other inbred Red Boy studs to strengthen and improve the line. The gameness of this line is legendary, and is what has made the Red Boy strain so highly desirable. These are fast starting fiery dogs with tremendous wind. Some would say that the only draw back to the Red Boy line is the lack of mouth, this is not the case with all Red Boy dogs, but has pretty well been accepted as the truth by most. It really comes down to a list of priorities, gameness versus mouth.

His classic match against Cables Fang exemplifies that:
1st match: - Mr. Bass vs. William Cable - males @ 52 lbs. J. Adams - referee. J.C. Vincent is handling a red-red nosed dog that he been conditioned for this match by Howard T. He's called Red Boy. William Cable conditioned and handled his two-time winner Fang, a red dog black mask. Fang in Red Boy's chest and has a good hold and stays there. Red Boy trying to get him out with ear holds. At 9 minutes a turn is called on Fang, but he's in hold with Red Boy's leg in his mouth. Handled at 17 minutes Fang scratches good. Red Boy scratches at 21 minutes and comes to the top fighting the head. Fang evens things up fighting the back end at 28 minutes. Red Boy on the nose. 30 minutes Fang scratches. The dogs are handled again at 33 minutes and the referee makes an error and Fang scratches again. Three more scratches by Red Boy and two by Fang and at 1 hour 2 minutes Fang is to scratch. He wanders off to a neutral corner and is counted out. Bass' Tramp Red Boy wins.

The Red Boy dogs gained their fame in the Carolina's, but their main introduction into the fast lane came with the cross of Ch. Jocko. Jocko, a Carolina dog himself, was a pit intelligent dog with good biting ability, something the Red Boy dogs did not have. Red Boy dogs were extremely game soft mouth dogs, with the exception of Chavis Ch Yellow John. Yellow John was the first of the Red Boy breeding to earn the title of champion. He was a 43 lb. buckskin dog that won three in the South in 1980-1981. Yellow John went on to produce some of the most honest bulldogs of modern times Tant's Gr.Ch. Yellow. STP's Gr. Ch. John Boy, STP's Ch. Sassy, Super Gnat's' Boots (who holds the record for the longest recorded match in history, going 4:52 for the win), Melvin's 5X winner JR. and others.

The Red Boy/Jocko cross continue to live on today and are exceptional fast lane dogs. Some of the most successful crosses with the Red Boy strain have been with: Red Boy/Jocko, Jeep/Red Boy, Jeep/Red Boy/Rascal, and more recently Red Boy/Patrick. These are all proven crosses that have taken the sporting game to a new level in performance. Some additional Red Boy dogs of note are Marlowe's Ch. Britches, Miller's Red Man a great producer in his day and the sire of Hoffman's Booger ROM, Marlowe's Rattler the sire of Ch. Britches, Marlowe's Mr. Bulldog the sire of both Peaches, Tabby Girl and Miret's Bud, who sired Ch. Gambler, and O. Stevens' Red Ape, who has produced Ch. Bear, Ch. Irish Rebel and many other winners.

If you could Slim, it would be appreciated! Anything on Britches, Bingo, Cherry, Crypt, Haymaker, Boomer or Hap? I get the gameness thing, heard they not too intelligent and scream like banshees, but what's around today that's throwing better Redboy than yesterday?

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away.......or something like that.

Growing up int he dogs I always heard rumors about how Red Boy really came about. Just like any other famous dog ('from the ol' Mountain Man, "if you win two or three or produce two or three winners there is always some sonofabith in the corner who knows how he/she is really bred" or in so many words)

The story I fee most comfortable with and I feel is the most credible is that Mr. teal registered a dog off his dogs and that dog ended up being Red Boy. In that area, and this is the rural south in the 60's, there was a older black sportsman named Mr. Calvin Krebbs. I heard Mr. Calvin for years and later in life heard his last name and the two stories lined up perfectly.

He had a yard full of dead game dogs that would stay all night no matter. His game checks were somewhat brutal but very effective. Some say bought, some say who-doo-ed and some say swindled but it was said Mr. Teal got the dog from Mr. Krebbs. In short time he stopped a few and in time he was matched.

At the Teal place of business when the deal was being done it was noted the dog looked a lot like the Cable/Stidham dogs and it was said Mr. Krebbs asked "where do you think they got their dogs from?" Rumor has it that in the mountains and up state part of South Carolina many a dog was bought from Mr. Krebbs and papered as something else.

Mr. Krebbs would game check his dog hard, somewhat doctor him and put him on the chain. The next morning when he was stiff and sore and beat up pretty bad he was faced with another dog. If he scratched twice ten minutes apart after a 30 count he was considered a bulldog. If not, well, then not. The Red Boy dog answered that bell and then threw those traits.

Some of the early Red Boy dogs were not known as biters, those were the Red Boy dogs that were down out of the Teal family, all nite game but never the mouth to write home about. Then Teal's Jeff started throwing all nite dogs that could really bite (hint, hint) When bred to the Bullet bitches the mouth was there. Some of the inbred dogs lost mouth rather quickly but for the most part stayed game. Yellow John's litter mate brother was said to have needed his food soaked in water in order to eat. He could not handle dry dog food. No mouth. His name was JR and it was said each and every hair had to be individually killed in order for him to not scratch.

Maybe the best breeding to Red Boy blood was the Jocko blood. Maybe the most influential cross in all the dogs. And what makes me think the Krebbs version is true, and making sure it is known I am not a breeder, is the bottom half of the Jock dogs come from that same Stidham/Cable blood that is arguably what made Red Boy. So when bred it was a bringing the same family back together, but bred by different people, for different reasons and the combination had major impact. It threw bulldogs that in turn threw bulldogs who in turn threw bulldogs. The mouth came back and the all nite dumb game gene was ever present. At the time the Jocko dogs were more popular and the cross was called dumb ol' Jocko-Red Boy dogs.

In time the popularity, and that is what has just about killed the family, made the Red Boy dog come first so the RBJ dogs were born (maybe 5 or more years after the dumb ol' Jocko Red Boy dogs were winning matches).

The man who owned Tina and Face and Black Betty and did a lot of the work behind the Jackson bred dogs was in the restaurant the night the money/dogs were exchanged and within a week Red Boy was born, bred down off of Jeff and Suzie.

I guess the rest has been history.,

My favorite version is the Mims dogs. They temd to be rougher than most other Red Boy strains. I enjoyed the Cottingham dogs for a number of years. We had good ones bred down out of the Holland family with it understood several Jackson dogs were bought but never registered or papered and then dogs off Cadillac II started having thick hides, large bone structure and could really bite. Go figure.

This is a 3/4 Red Boy dog that had all the tools except a brain. Stupid game, with the operative word being stupid, but at the same time just as game as stupid.

    http://www.apbt.online-pedigrees.com/modules.php?name=Pedigrees&file=printPedigree&dog_id=539946

This is a Mims type dog I have now. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. But he is brindle and looks like Brandy Girl spit him out from 30 years ago. I am hoping to get his dumbass bred soon. I have made bets for $100. Drop a rib eye or dog food in his bowl and he will cut circles until he gets his rope on a garage door spring. He will not bother the steak until he is finished on the rope, which can be hours. Easy keeper as long as his rope is available once or twice a day.

Maybe just a story, For that I am not sure. But it has been quite the journey. But would not trade i for anything.

    Babbling.

The blood certainly seems the best bet if you had a small yard, and were starting out, seems the best to get you to the square on a consistent basis,OG would you agree?

Th Jocko dogs were plenty game and winning before the cross to Red Boy. Same with Jeep. Same with Eli and same with Bolio. For whatever reason the Red Boy dog's popularity sky rocketed to where the myths and old wives tales sort of took root in the minds of a lot of dogmen. Red Boy dogs are game but can't bite. Eli dogs can bite but are not game. As if en entire family/strain can be judged by one dog, LOL

That popularity evolved to the point that the pure Red Boy dogs were suppose to fix anything and they were bred in the masses to fix all that was wrong in the bulldog world. Still to this day a pure Red Boy dog off dogs who have done nothing, off of parents who have done nothing will out sell any line/any family out there regardless of actual resume. It just works like that.

In the terms of 'evolution', 'development' of a family the dogs were peddled so fast and so quick they soon could not stand on their own. Few were winning with straight Red Boy dogs. The family suffered as a whole. I have always thought that is why you do not see a lot of the blood coming back to the US after leaving, doing good things and then standing alone elsewhere.

That is just personal opinion, no real data to support.

Lots of families have been peddled but I can't really think of any family peddled more than Red Boy dogs, or maybe better said I have never seen a family that was as easy as Red Boy dogs to peddle. Maybe it is the nostalgia of stupid game dogs from many years past, not sure, but list a pure Red Boy dog and people will pay out the ying yang for one and at the same time let a dog off proven parents who were off proven parents will be passed by for less than chump change.

For most, a pure red By dog is a wise investment. LOL

@slim12 what you said about peddling Redboy dogs I was aware of, but there's some diamonds in there too.. I knew for a while Redboy dogs are like a global currency in dog peddling, but never heard of Mr Krebbs before you mentioned him in your post, you heard of a possible DNA connection between Redboy and Jocko, well I always wondered if there was a connection between Redboy and Red Devil? Sure I read the Norrod thing, but the similarities are significant in my inexperienced and ill-informed view.. Thanks again for taking the time anyway man! Appreciated.
